Why did this even become an issue? A few years ago, a baby born in the US to illegal aliens was sent back to the parents' country of origin with the parents. The baby has the right to return when an adult. This anchoring scam is a new development.

I think this goes back to some judicial activism and Clinton Administration rulings that said you couldn't deny various benefits - health-care, education, welfare, food stamps, housing assistance because of citizen status (or at least were no longer allowed to ask the status). That's when the floodgates really opened.
