G.O.P. Candidates Criticize Slur by Conservative Author [Ann Coulter]
The New York Times ^ | 3/4/07 | ADAM NAGOURNEY

WASHINGTON, March 3 — Three of the leading Republican presidential candidates on Saturday denounced one of their party’s best-known conservative commentators for using an antigay epithet when discussing a Democratic presidential contender at a gathering of conservatives here.

The remarks by Ann Coulter, an author who regularly speaks at conservative events, were sharply denounced by the candidates, Senator John McCain of Arizona, Rudolph W. Giuliani of New York and Mitt Romney of Massachusetts. Their statements came after Democrats, gay rights groups and bloggers raised a storm of protest over the remarks.

Speaking at the Conservative Political Action Conference before an overflow crowd on Friday, Ms. Coulter said, “I was going to have a few comments on the other Democratic presidential candidate John Edwards, but it turns out you have to go into rehab if you use the word ‘faggot,’ so I — so kind of an impasse, can’t really talk about Edwards.”

Mr. Edwards’s aides responded with an e-mail message that attacked Ms. Coulter and urged supporters to donate to Mr. Edwards’s campaign. “John was singled out for a personal attack because the Republican establishment knows he poses the greatest threat to their power,” said his campaign manager, David E. Bonior. “Since they have nothing real to use against him, Coulter’s resorting to the classic right-wing strategy of riling up hate to smear a progressive champion.”

Ms. Coulter, asked for a reaction to the Republican criticism, said in an e-mail message: “C’mon, it was a joke. I would never insult gays by suggesting that they are like John Edwards. That would be mean.”

"Being a Republican has nothing to do with agreement with such a ridiculous remark."

Nor does it have anything to do with embracing the cultural war that has made using the word faggot a thought crime.

And the Republican leadership wonders why it got its Butt kicked back in November...

They seem to think the Mark Foley strategy will work.

I am sick of the perverts. Ann Coulter would make a better president.

As as matter of fact, David Duke was over in the middle east making uber liberal comments supporting the islam fascists. His commentary would be far more welcome at moveon.org...

...or the National Press Club. And it sounds like you've bought their line about Ann being a fascist who needs to be silenced.

The Iraq war not going well is why the Dems won last November.

I agree. Every time Republicans do the apology thing they look silly, although not quite as stupid as Tim Hardaway has looked apologizing for being brutally honest about how he feels about homosexuals.

The Republican candidates seem to be unanimous: Ann needs to go to rehab.

I would never vote for any of these three anyways. All three RINO's who let Democrats dictate to them.

All 3 march in lock step. Do we really want any of them? They are already showing they will cave to lib criticism.

There not saying that.
There just saying, her comments were stupid.
If some Democrat said only anorexics should support Ann.
You would say what a stupid comment.

Ann needs to go to rehab.

Yeah. We can't be having our kind using humor rooted in truth to point out the idiocy of the left. /sarcasm

It seems like everybody is trying to glom onto Ann. Sort of like when they mention Rush's name. Hint that Rush is in a story and the audience shoots way up. The same is true with Ann. Thats because they are both effective. Write about Ann Coulter, or Rush, and your little seldom seen column gets seen and heard.

I guess the Rinos are looking for a little Ann time as well. And who can really blame them. What better way to mollify the bullies of the leftist mob. But it never works. And this is where the Rinos always, eternally, screw up and give justice to the supposed moral indignation to the lefty lynch mob. But its a fake moral indignation. And everybody knows it. Ann calls them on it. And they don't like it. So they enlist the Rinos to join their lynch mob and do their dirty work for them.

But there is a studied radio silence about the daily, no, a thousand times daily, outrages against basic humanity and decency cast over all of society like a pall, unleashed in torrents from the Dems and the left. Gimme a break. They're just trying to deflect attention away from the war-like, (against their own country),radical, indecent, rhetoric, that suppurates regularly from their side. All day, every day.
