WASHINGTON, March 3 Three of the leading Republican presidential candidates on Saturday denounced one of their partys best-known conservative commentators for using an antigay epithet when discussing a Democratic presidential contender at a gathering of conservatives here.
The remarks by Ann Coulter, an author who regularly speaks at conservative events, were sharply denounced by the candidates, Senator John McCain of Arizona, Rudolph W. Giuliani of New York and Mitt Romney of Massachusetts. Their statements came after Democrats, gay rights groups and bloggers raised a storm of protest over the remarks.
Speaking at the Conservative Political Action Conference before an overflow crowd on Friday, Ms. Coulter said, I was going to have a few comments on the other Democratic presidential candidate John Edwards, but it turns out you have to go into rehab if you use the word faggot, so I so kind of an impasse, cant really talk about Edwards.
Mr. Edwardss aides responded with an e-mail message that attacked Ms. Coulter and urged supporters to donate to Mr. Edwardss campaign. John was singled out for a personal attack because the Republican establishment knows he poses the greatest threat to their power, said his campaign manager, David E. Bonior. Since they have nothing real to use against him, Coulters resorting to the classic right-wing strategy of riling up hate to smear a progressive champion.
Ms. Coulter, asked for a reaction to the Republican criticism, said in an e-mail message: Cmon, it was a joke. I would never insult gays by suggesting that they are like John Edwards. That would be mean.

[John Edwards isn't gay. The joke bombed.]
John "Breck Girl" Edwards is so very gay. Prissy, lisping, swishing men usually are. But when you combine that with the fact that he married a big woman, much less attractive than he is, it's a slam-dunk.
He's gay.
I can't believe you don't see it.
Lord, what a bunch of twittering little panty-waists. All these criticisms of Ann. Go peddle your sanctimony somewhere else. On Free Republic, we love her.
"No, instead I'll cheer Ann onward, with every barb she throws, and hope she scores a hit someday, when some angry lib finally has a stroke over one of her comments."
They're not angry at Ann, the libs are angry, period. They just know that jumping on her remarks will make alot of pantywaist republicans crap in their pants. Ann is fine, its the cowardly republicans that are the problem.
Good post!
[Fine then, super conservatives, can we expect any of you to start calling Obama a "n*gger" soon too?.. Or lets call Hillary a "c*nt" too. That'll teach them! ]
Hussein Osama Obama is a descendent of slave owners. He'd be more along the lines of a Eurasian carpet-bagger.
And Hillary is a c*nt.
Whoa. I hope I didn't just lose the election for the GOP.
Thank you, upsdriver.
Your welcome!
I believe you might be gay!
Now do you take that as the the real meaning of gay or do you use the corrupted meaning?
Nowadays. There was actually an infestation of Duke supporters here at FR when he made rumblings about running for the GOP nomination in 2000. I did rhetorical battle with the Duke-heads and sent them running with their curly little tails between their legs. And if you happen to be among those that think slurs of any type are anything but detrimental to the conservative cause, you're on my list.
Get a brain! Get a conscience! Get an idea of what PREVENTS conservatives from getting elected! Get out of your echo chamber!
It's not a crime. It's just stupid.
If you think it's so wonderful, why don't you insist that your favorite GOP candidate start using the word in his next speech? Think that would be smart?
Thats right even Michelle Malkin wrote on her site it was a dumb comment.
But remember, last year Ann also said Al Gore was a fag on one of the talk shows.
I think it was Chris Matthews.
I think she's a top notch speaker.
Her problem is, she's become more about about pushing buttons to get a reaction and by doing so, she says alot of dumb things.
Good luck. I'm a HUGE Ann Coulter supporter. I have no problem with her joke. You sound like a real bow-tie, George Will rollover conservative.
So. Run me off. I'm waiting.
Funny. Did you hear the public uproar when when Elton John or use terms like "Jesus freak" in his songs (Tiny Dancer)? Or Ted Turner uses the word over and over as a perjorative? No--because there wasn't any. Including from you, I'll bet.
But here's how our side dealt with that put-down (from Wikipedia):
"It is still sometimes used as a pejorative epithet against Christians in general. However, some Christians now consider it a reclaimed word, as some Christians, especially Christian youth, occasionally use it as a positive term to let others know that they are not ashamed of their beliefs...
... The term has recently been used frequently by Ted Turner and Howard Stern, referring however to fundamentalists."
How about this? I'll get upset about Ann Coulter, a social/political commentator--NOT A CANDIDATE FOR ANYTHING--using the word "faggot"--as soon as libs call off the assassination fantasy movies about Bush, stop bashing Christians, stop refering to Bush as the number one "terrorist" in the world (Belafonte and many others) and stop expressing dissapointment that VP Cheney wasn't actually murdered by terrorists last week (Bill Mahr).
John Edwards did not marry a big woman.
When they were married she was gorgeous. And thin.
I am sure that as a nation we will survive Ann's statement even though we have become a nation of wimps where a humorous statement causes more reaching for Valium and cries of outrage than the murder of Pam Waechter.
Sounds like you have a level head. The bigger problem than this commentator's words is the selective outrage of the propagandists of the left.
That's the subject conservatives should be using this episode to talk about. They could easily turn the tables and challenge the MSM and Dem Prez candidates, using similar recent comments by prominent lib commentators/activists.
Her caustic wit is exactly what is needed to puncture and deflate the vast egos and pompous vacuities that pass for the MSM's darlings. The three stooges (RINO Romney, RINO McCain, and RINO Guiliani) are so far from conservative, that they don't appreciate what a true conservative can or more importantly should do
I tend to agree. However, it does appear that she's made her point, as evidenced by the reactions on both (all??) sides.
The left fears Ann Coulter - she has to be silenced. The reaction of the media and politicians to her statements was totally predictable - they acted like trained circus dogs.
Maybe I missed it but there was no reaction to MSNBC when it ran a banner calling Niger Innis (a Republican who happens to be black) "Nigger Innis."
