Ann Coulter, You're No Sister Souljah
The Politico ^ | 3 March 2007 | Jennifer Rubin

Posted on 03/03/2007 8:01:55 PM PST by llevrok

Ann Coulter is not African-American, does not sing and never said “If black people kill black people every day, why not have a week and kill white people?” However, she is the closest the Republicans will get to Sister Souljah.

Coulter has made a career of interspersing insightful and cutting political criticism with outrageous and morally repugnant remarks. She attracted considerable attention with her crack about the group of 9/11 widows dubbed the “Jersey girls,” with a line in one of her books, “These broads are millionaires, lionized on TV and in articles about them, reveling in their status as celebrities and stalked by grief-arazzis. These self-obsessed women seemed genuinely unaware that 9/11 was an attack on our nation and acted as if the terrorist attacks happened only to them. ... I’ve never seen people enjoying their husbands' deaths so much.”

Then, there was her crack about Muslims at last year’s Conservative Political Action Conference (CPAC): “I think our motto should be post-9-11, ‘rag head talks tough, rag head faces consequences.’” At CPAC on Thursday, in endorsing Republican presidential aspirant Mitt Romney, who needs more bad press like a hole in the head, she piped up with this one: “I was going to say something about John Edwards, but it turns out you have to go into rehab if you use the word ‘faggot.’”

It's about time for a presidential contender, perhaps all of them in the spirit of Newt Gingrich’s crusade for improving public discourse, to say “enough.” Coulter’s never-ending stream of venom is not amusing, unhelpful to Republicans, and not in keeping with the ideals of a party that fancies itself as the proponent of a colorblind society and heir to Lincoln.

It is not “caving” into political correctness to distance and indeed condemn such remarks as unworthy of a political event like CPAC. To the contrary, it is altogether fitting that a group that ostensibly searches for the best in conservative ideas, rewards political courage and encourages intellectual debate, should be able to differentiate the amusing from the offensive, and the clever from the vile.

Conservatives take great glee in condemning ideological opponents who share stages with Al Sharpton or give a convention seat to Michael Moore. It would certainly boost their credibility to toss their own baggage out.

Would it be a stunt to call out Coulter, who obviously revels in the attention of provocative pronouncements? No. Excommunication is not being suggested, just a public rebuke. By clearly stating her comments are beyond the bounds of civil discourse and her presence not a welcome addition to a mature political party, the Republicans could do themselves a world of good. How often does a party have the opportunity to display some measure of dignity, restraint and self-reflection.?

So who will play the role of Bill Clinton to Coulter’s Sister Souljah? It would be a sad commentary on the GOP if the answer is “no one.”

Jennifer Rubin is a writer who lives in Virginia. Her columns appear in the Weekly Standard, the American Spectator, Human Events, abc.com and National Review Online.

The GOP ran away from Trent Lott also. There were reasons not to like him but that was not one of them.

Yes, you are free to prate as you please. And rational people are free to laugh at your inane rants.

Thank God for Ann Coulter! We need a thousand more like her -- and a million fewer like Jennifer Rubin.

Actually he didn't refer to you as a '14-year-old on crack'. He said your posts read like they were written by one.

"I didn't call Coulter a whore."

No of course you didn't:

Giuliani, Romney, McCain camps denounce Coulter’s attack on Edwards ^

OK, so can I denounce Coulter by by calling her a 'Whore' and have it be no big deal then?

Apparently not. I posted a threat asking this question and it got pulled.

Which of course, makes sense. It's unacceptable, as it should be. But not paying the same credit to Edwards is blatantly hypocritical.

Anne is just about the most decent person on the political scene.

Decent my ass. If she were decent, she'd denounce Edwards because his opinions were wrong, and debate his opinions.

For example, if I were like Coulter, I'd denounce her because she's a 'Whore', as opposed to denouncing her because name-calling, disrespectful and counter-productive actions.

"...Coulter can call anybody she wants a faggot. And I can call her a shrill, rude, unserious noisemaker, unworthy of being taken seriously, and unworthy of being representative of a good movement...."

You could but you would be very unappreciative of a gutsy lady who brings more people-especially young people to the conservative way of thinking than anybody else since Rush Limbaugh.

Protesting and being rude to get attention are different things. One has a point, the other doesn't.

>> And if we want to be taken seriously, we'll denounce [Ann Coulter].

If we're to take you seriously, you should take care when choosing what needs to be denounced. If your concern is the opinion others have of you regarding Ann Coulter, why don't you first start with denouncing her remarks instead of Ann as an individual.

In spite of your sensibilities, your appeals will earn zero credits and instead give the impression you're throwing one of your own overboard.

"so I guess Michelle Malkin and Hewitt and Captain Ed are all phony's too?.."

You really don't seem to be able to follow an argument. Perhaps it is the coke.

Anyway, may point is Malkin has made preposterous mistakes (such as her claims about the AP's source, which got swept under the rug). Hewitt assured the world that the GOP would sweep the board on November 7th. The guy from Captains' Quarters makes mistakes too, and offers himself for hire so you can hear him tell you how to get rich from bloggin.

All of these people have made more grievous mistakes than making a very apt joke before a supposedly an audience made-up of conservative news junkies.

But apparently it is your mission to post on every thread on this subject and (possibly pretend) to be so thick that everything has to be explained to you over and over again.

In some quarters that is called trolling.

RE: "Her effectiveness has been teetering lately because she's always on the defensive for some provocative comment or another."

I believe you've got that wrong. She's on the defensive because the enemies of conservatives make her an issue.

See how even conservatives do it to her. The author of the post didn't bother to point out that the "Jersey Girls" were very, very political. Ms Coulter would not have been critical had the widows not been.

For decades many have found themselves on the defensive with no fault of their own.

"McCarthyism" became the issue in the 1950s, not national security. The CP/USA invented the word.

The left avoided calling it the House Committee on UnAmerican Activities and instead called it the (house) unAmerican activities committee; a.k.a. HUAC; that made it sound pejorative.

Even an innocent plea for law and order (in response to looting, killings, burnings, riots) became the issue in the 1960s because the left made it "law'n order" and screamed "Racist!" claiming it was a code for the N word.

Ditto the 10th Amendment was code for the N word thanks to leftist word twisters.

Even if people agree with me that doesn't mean they have to like Ms Coulter but I swear they ought to look at the leftists shenanigans first.

Because this isn't the first time she's said something this stupid, it's just the most recent.

Then Coulter never called Edwards a faggot either.

So what is your problem?

(Just kidding. I don't want to know.)
