Ann Coulter, You're No Sister Souljah
The Politico ^ | 3 March 2007 | Jennifer Rubin

Posted on 03/03/2007 8:01:55 PM PST by llevrok

Ann Coulter is not African-American, does not sing and never said “If black people kill black people every day, why not have a week and kill white people?” However, she is the closest the Republicans will get to Sister Souljah.

Coulter has made a career of interspersing insightful and cutting political criticism with outrageous and morally repugnant remarks. She attracted considerable attention with her crack about the group of 9/11 widows dubbed the “Jersey girls,” with a line in one of her books, “These broads are millionaires, lionized on TV and in articles about them, reveling in their status as celebrities and stalked by grief-arazzis. These self-obsessed women seemed genuinely unaware that 9/11 was an attack on our nation and acted as if the terrorist attacks happened only to them. ... I’ve never seen people enjoying their husbands' deaths so much.”

Then, there was her crack about Muslims at last year’s Conservative Political Action Conference (CPAC): “I think our motto should be post-9-11, ‘rag head talks tough, rag head faces consequences.’” At CPAC on Thursday, in endorsing Republican presidential aspirant Mitt Romney, who needs more bad press like a hole in the head, she piped up with this one: “I was going to say something about John Edwards, but it turns out you have to go into rehab if you use the word ‘faggot.’”

It's about time for a presidential contender, perhaps all of them in the spirit of Newt Gingrich’s crusade for improving public discourse, to say “enough.” Coulter’s never-ending stream of venom is not amusing, unhelpful to Republicans, and not in keeping with the ideals of a party that fancies itself as the proponent of a colorblind society and heir to Lincoln.

It is not “caving” into political correctness to distance and indeed condemn such remarks as unworthy of a political event like CPAC. To the contrary, it is altogether fitting that a group that ostensibly searches for the best in conservative ideas, rewards political courage and encourages intellectual debate, should be able to differentiate the amusing from the offensive, and the clever from the vile.

Conservatives take great glee in condemning ideological opponents who share stages with Al Sharpton or give a convention seat to Michael Moore. It would certainly boost their credibility to toss their own baggage out.

Would it be a stunt to call out Coulter, who obviously revels in the attention of provocative pronouncements? No. Excommunication is not being suggested, just a public rebuke. By clearly stating her comments are beyond the bounds of civil discourse and her presence not a welcome addition to a mature political party, the Republicans could do themselves a world of good. How often does a party have the opportunity to display some measure of dignity, restraint and self-reflection.?

So who will play the role of Bill Clinton to Coulter’s Sister Souljah? It would be a sad commentary on the GOP if the answer is “no one.”

No offense, but I don't go to those websites to form my conservative opinions about anything.

I was here pretty much before they were. I like Malkin, because she's a Freeper through and through, but she's still a newbie to the likes of me.

Coulter’s never-ending stream of venom is not amusing,

Not to liberals who are foaming at the mouth. However, to conservatives, well, we be rolling over laughing.

"Girly man would have been much better.

Huge difference between a speech and FR.

The difference is class and no class."

The difference is understanding the premise of the joke or being clueless -- like yourself.

Rush calls Edwards "The Breck Girl" and I think that is being nice.

I think any reference to Edwards that does not include some variation on the phrase "sissy elitist bastard" is simply too mild.

Your comments hit the mark. Political correctness can only be countered by ignoring it.

Coulter is what a good cowgirl should be. Ragheads, faggots, and commies need to be offended. Ann should not be William F. Buckley even though she has the intellect and the education. She needs to stomp on the Lib taboos of our time.

I don't use the N-word but New York City needs to now that it is against the law.

The fight for survival, I suspect, will begin and end with the control of the Republican Party. If conservatives lose, all is lost.

Exactly. That's why it's important for us to support Ann. People may not recognize it because of her humor, but she is a great warrior.

Your quote.

The right is not allowed to ridicule the left. It is the sacrosanct position of rhetorical privilege.

In this, is the power of political correctness. It is the position taken in the so-called human rights commissions and their equivalent in the United States. In the general application of "judgements" in certain areas a well known Canadian writer, noted in the National Post, these facts. Courts generally give advantage to Muslims over Christians, Woman over men. Blacks over Whites. It is an incredible double standard, arguable though it may be in some cases.

This is proven by the largesse given to the likes of Alec Baldwin, Bill Mahar, throw in Cindy Sheehan et al. Alas, this is not too clearly realised by the general population.

Pavlov would have loved the whole scenario.

"Well, if we conservatives are going to draw a line in the dirt over Jennifer and Ann, I am crossing the line over to Ann's side."

Exactly, or put another way; If I'm going to get in bed with anyone, I'm getting in bed with Ann!

So who will play the role of Bill Clinton to Coulter’s Sister Souljah?

Clinton was so daring as to criticize Sister Souljah's remark, noting "If you took the words ‘white’ and ‘black’ and you reversed them, you might think David Duke was giving that speech" ( wikipedia ) I don't think he ever came close to "denouncing" Sister Souljah. Certainly that was not my impression at the time. I was amazed that such a timid demurral from the sentiment, "why not have a week and kill white people," was seen as so daring.

Sister Souljah seems to be doing fine, BTW. From her website:

Sister Souljah, hip-hop generation author, activist, recording artist, and film producer, is the most powerful and meaningful person speaking to youth and students today. Her intelligence is unselfish. She shines as she offers cultural, spiritual, political, economical, practical analysis and constructive solutions with the precision of a surgeon. Souljah’s words, thoughts, lessons, and books are transforming the next generation. Once you have heard her speak, it’s impossible for you to remain the same. You’ll change the way you think, love and live.

"Someone point out a leading blogger or politician who liked what she said."

LOL!

Those leading bloggers are the ones huddled in the back of the room in the far corner, wishing they could headline at CPAC someday.

The bloggers mentioned so far, especially Hewitt and Malkin have embarrassed themselves time and again with their unsubstantiated claims.

Where are the cries for their heads? Haven't they discredited internet bloggers with their inability to fact-check?

They screw-up are a lot more serious than some joke. Or at least they would be if anybody took them seriously in the first place.

The hatred the Left has for Coulter is visceral. Their disproportionate reaction to her comments is a clear indication of how much they hate her. The idea that Edwards' spokesman and others are clamoring for an apology from a political pundit who is not part of the GOP hierarchy or an elected official is ludicrous.

Tony Snow would be busy all day every day asking for apologies from the likes of Maher, Moore, Oberman, Mathews, Franken, et. al. who call the President stupid, a Nazi, Hitler, a liar, murderer, and every vile name in the book. The Left makes movies about his assassination.

Edwards is a public figure subject to whatever ridicule we can come up with. Let him try to use our liable laws to seek redress. It frustrates the hell out of the Left that they cannot force Coulter to back down or disappear from scene. Those tactics work against Rep elected officials. Every time Coulter speaks at a college campus she is heckled, called names, objects thrown at her, picketed, etc. Ann is laughing all the way to the bank.

I don't go to them either to form my opinion...but calling Malkin or Hewitt RINO's is a stretch....and I was backing up my opinion with mainstream and active sites.....I know on FR if that that makes everything and everyone a RINO but I don't see it that way...

Oh, believe me, I recognize it. I accept others, even RINOs, if they are going in a conservative direction. If they alter that direction and take control, then all bets are off. We need firm hands and rooted American principles to set things right. Sorry to say, that's a rare commodity in the Party of Lincoln.
