Fallout Over Coulter’s Anti-Gay Remark
NY Tiems ^ | 3/3/07 | Adam Nagourney

There’s some big fallout from the meeting in Washington of the Conservative Political Action Conference, three days of conferencing, caucusing, presidential addressing and book-hawking. These conferences have historically been known for displaying what its own organizers would describe as over-the-top behavior, and one of the regular speakers – Ann Coulter – offered an example of it when she used an anti-gay epithet on Friday to describe John Edwards, the former senator from North Carolina and Democratic presidential contender. “I was going to have a few comments on the other Democratic presidential candidate John Edwards, but it turns out you have to go into rehab if you use the word ‘faggot,’ so I — so kind of an impasse, can’t really talk about Edwards,” she said, speaking to an overflow room of activists. That rehab remark was apparently a reference to Isaiah Washington, one of the stars on Grey’s Anatomy, a television series, who called a co-star T.R. Knight anti-gay names and went to rehabilitation over it. Mr. Edwards’s campaign quickly responded. “John was singled out for a personal attack because the Republican establishment knows he poses the greatest threat to their power,” said his campaign manager, David Bonior. “Since they have nothing real to use against him, Coulter’s resorting to the classic right-wing strategy of riling up hate to smear a progressive champion.”

Howard Dean, the Democratic National Committee chairman, said: “There is no place in political discourse for this kind of hate-filled and bigoted comments. While Democrats and Republicans may disagree on the issues, we should all be able to agree that this kind of vile rhetoric is out of bounds.”

Rudy and McCain already climbed into bed with Edwards today over the issue.

And so you are in the camp that thinks it's perfectly civilized discourse to refer to others in such a derogatory manner?

Consider yourself part of a majority on FR these days.

I say we make Anne Coulter the spokewoman when anything needs to be said to the leader of Iran.

Funny how the Left says all sorts of awful things to the right. That's ok, but when an insult comes back their way. They have a conniption fit, and demand apologies.

They have a conniption fit, and demand apologies.

And it brings some of their apologists out of the closet.

I'm so amazed that even now people don't understand the true intention behind her statement.

Demonstrating the absurd with absurdity is still over some people's heads.

We have democrat congressmen and women calling our President a liar and a murderer ON THE HOUSE FLOOR OF THE CAPITOL and yet she calls little Johnny a 'faggot' and she is the demoness from hell. If you can't see past this little smokescreen then maybe you need to take off those rose colored glasses.

In the words of those two Guinness guys: "BRILLIANT"

Foul language and personal insults are the coin of the realm at DU.

Not so nice to be emulating that hateful crowd.

If a person can't make their point in a humorous or thoughtful way they ought not be on the stage.

I like the term "fallout" as used this way. It implies that she tresspassed some ancient rule of human behavior that predated the English common law such that any reaction to it was a natural and universally expected response.

Those that fell, of course, jumped.

If you want to see some hateful treatment, do a Google search for "IMAGES" and type in Ann Coulter. Turn the filter off, and be prepared for some sick Democrat liberal garbage.

Two wrongs don't make a right. I've seen some of the stuff on DU and perhaps it's that I am an old old woman, but I am not persuaded that this rhetoric serves any positive purpose. Let them dwell in the gutter, I don't want to join them.

The Democrats have the chutzpah to talk about vile rhetoric. Ann's comment is nowhere near as damaging to the Breck Girl's aspirations as the moonbats' demented desire to see Vice President Dick Cheney murdered in Afghanistan. Where's the demand from the RNC Chairman for the Democrats' apology for that? Only liberals are allowed to occupy the moral high ground in this country and`our party's candidates grovel before their arrogant mendacity!

Today, denouncing homopsexuality is a thought crime. Tomorrow, it well be liberalism.

Exactly. Even conservatives like Michelle Malkin take her too literally. The best way of getting a rise out of humorless liberals is to hit them hard where they are weakest... their inability to appreciate sheer ridicule.
