Let's Make a Deal - Social conservatives, Rudy Giuliani, and the end of the litmus test.
The Weekly Standard ^ | March 12, 2007 | Noemie Emery

Next year may see the party of the Sunbelt and Reagan, based in the South and in Protestant churches, nominate its first presidential candidate who is Catholic, urban, and ethnic--and socially liberal on a cluster of issues that set him at odds with the party's base. As a result, it may also see the end of the social issues litmus test in the Republican party, done in not by the party's left wing, which is shrunken and powerless, but by a fairly large cadre of social conservatives convinced that, in a time of national peril, the test is a luxury they cannot afford.

I highly recommend that Conservatives who are interested in making INFORMATIVE DECISIONS based on reality READ THE ENTIRE ARTICLE.

Actually, she's a brilliant writer and her point is well-taken. Do you want someone who is 80% with you--and with you on something a President and only a President can have an effect on--or someone who is 100% against you on everything?
Wake up and smell the coffee.

"I'm still waiting for someone to explain how open borders, gun control and demographic suicide make America more secure in this time of "national peril".

Add to that Rudy's CFR and Global Warming Nutdom support. Rudy is not even close to being a Conservative.

This is the same man who showed up at the Empire State Building, two days after a Palestinian jihadi went on a shooting rampage there, and joined Carolyn McCarthy in calling for more gun control. And he never mentioned the shooter's name, the fact that he was Palestinian, or the word "terrorism".

I can't think of a more egregious act in relation to a terrorist attack by any candidate in the field.

I'm still waiting for someone to tell me why he is so qualified to fight the War on Terror, especially since several other candidates are much better qualified. It is a shell game, produced and directed by a PR campaign that started on September 12, 2001.

That's sick.

It's says a lot when someone like Tyrrell---once the most RADICAL of conservatives---is backing Rudy.

My wife is a born/bred NYC native and graduate of an upper West side university. Before she came west to go to law school, she worked as an intern for a criminal defense firm the year Rudy took over the DoJ district.

She still remembers his (relatively small) office with a big banner hanging over the wall with head shots of all the major organized crime figures. Each time he took one down, he'd put up a red cross over their face.

Her dad was a mugging victim in the 70s; her entire upbringing was in an environment that was rapidly declining. Ask a NYer from that era, and they all have universal admiration for what Rudy accomplished.

She's thrilled he's running and can't wait to vote for him.

Because his lifelong fight against foreign terrorism and organized crime is unparalled in either party or among any other candidate.

I don't see the left dropping their litmus tests - pro abortion, pro tax/spend, anti military, etc.

You got it! I like how the litmus test was ours when it really was an opposite litmus test for the libs.

CORRECTED: I highly recommend that Conservatives who are interested in making INFORMED DECISIONS based on reality READ THE ENTIRE ARTICLE.

(I know better -- INFORMED DECISIONS, NOT "informative" -- that's what happens when I try to do three things at once)

Rudy is Catholic? Since when? I didn't think you could be a divorced and a practicing Catholic at the same time.

Since when does someone who has been married THREE times (OK, one was an annulment--where Rudy claimed that for 14 years he didn't know his wife was his second cousin. He CLAIMS he thought it was his third cousin. Yarite, Rudy--tell than to your liberal sycophants.) and strongly supports abortion--be considered a CATHOLIC?

Yep, CINO is the perfect term for Rudy.

Please elaborate.

"Because his lifelong fight against foreign terrorism and organized crime is unparalled in either party or among any other candidate."

Rudy was fighting against terrorism and crime when he was in grade school?
