Next year may see the party of the Sunbelt and Reagan, based in the South and in Protestant churches, nominate its first presidential candidate who is Catholic, urban, and ethnic--and socially liberal on a cluster of issues that set him at odds with the party's base. As a result, it may also see the end of the social issues litmus test in the Republican party, done in not by the party's left wing, which is shrunken and powerless, but by a fairly large cadre of social conservatives convinced that, in a time of national peril, the test is a luxury they cannot afford.

VTD?
Sounds like a disease.
fight against foreign terrorism and organized crime is unparalled
***Organized crime is part of the WOT? How many middle-americans have to deal with organized crime? That's what's going to make socons hold their noses and vote for this guy? One of the few contacts middle america will have with "organized" criminal behavior is the illegal alien issue, which is linked to WOT. Rudy gets it wrong. Duncan Hunter gets it right on WOT/Military, immigration and RKBA, all 3 issues of which are linked to WOT. Rudy only gets 1/3 right, which is about average for his score on socon issues and conservatism in general.
Which part of UNELECTABLE are you having trouble comprehending?
***Mr. Unelectable Duncan Hunter came within 1% of your candidate in the Spartanburg straw polls. If your candidate is so hot, how is it that he lost in Spartanburg to McCain?
Rudy is doomed. View this video to see an unelectable republican in his own words.

My "voting for a strong conservative" against Hillary AND $1 won't get you a cup of coffee at Starbucks.
Apparently you didn't notice that the US electorate is NOT dominated by conservatives.
Nobody is going to win the presidency with 30% of the votes.
If Giuliani should win we'll get more of what we've been getting, talk about securing the borders without it actually happening. Hunter will close the borders and won't make virtual excuses why it can't be done.
Glad to hear your father isn't a BINO. ;-)
I am clear on the numbers. Are you clear on the moral principles? What exactly do you stand and fight for? What moral absolutes are nonnegotiables with you, please?
Rudy IS the 'Reagan' of the 2008 election (in terms of name recognition/popularity, not necessarily ideology)...
BAck at you:
What exactly do you stand and fight for? HILLARY?
That's a great false dilemma. I'll answer your false dilemma hypothetical if you'll answer mine.
Hypothetical to answer your hypothetical. Both sides losing to Hillary.
The solib republican splits the base. The MSM turns on him the moment he is nominated. Hillary wins. Republican party is split.
The socon republican wins the nomination, loses to hildebeast in a tough fight. Republicans are united against the hillary presidency.
Which candidate is best for the republican party?
We now return to the regularly scheduled programming of the sound of crickets coming from team Rudy.....
Unless you consider elections for president to be nothing but popularity contests then I don't buy that. Read the comments all over the web, the democrats are dying to see Rudy win the nomination because he's a liberal and they know it. They want him for what he stands for just as conservatives prefer to see him lose for the exact opposite reasons.
Ok, Al. I'm over here on this thread so you can answer my contentions about how Rudy splits the socon base.
I sense some frustration in your post. I guess that you think that will earn you an excuse from answering my question.
It's a classic technique. I compliment you on it.
Answer my question.
I'm a single issue voter. Life.
***I can identify with that viewpoint. If I just count the dead bodies, that gives me a good look at some of the important issues. WOT? ~3000 dead Sept11, 2001 and another ~4000 american dead in action. Yes, important. Right to life? ~30,000,000 dead, (4 orders of magnitude more) maybe that much more important. Immigration? Not a lot of dead but it's certainly a security issue linked to WOT.
We've got 10 months to make our case for Hunter and we will give it a shot. One thing I know is that the GOP can afford a socon as a candidate, but cannot afford a party split. There's another one that Rudy fails.
Why don't you ask me what I'm going to do if they offer free unicorn rides after a trip on the good ship lollypop?
***Ouch. Sounds like a painful ride. And when you fall off, you drown.
Great writing. But I'm a socon who's going to vote for a good socon candidate, and great writing doesn't deter me when it lacks substance.
When I see your candidate on this video, I see a liberal, not a conservative.

I will sit back and laugh when you moan about Hillary!
***What do we get when Rudy gets the nomination, the MSM turns on him, Hillary runs to the right of him, middle america looks at videos like the one below, and he loses to Hillary AND we have a split republican party? Sitting back & laughing isn't one of our options. Your candidate is bad for the republican party.

Hey, Al:
There's some crickets over here, like I was saying.
More crickets here, Al. But you already know that...
In the absence of response, allow us to put in a plug for the candidate who has got it right on immigration: Duncan Hunter.
