CPAC: Giuliani
Human Events ^ | March 2, 2007 | Amanda Carpender

Some people tell me that Rudy Giuliani's speech at CPAC today was "terrific." Others say "outstanding."

I think they are mistaking Rudy for the previous speaker.

Before he came on NRA President Wayne LaPierra warmed up the crowd to such a degree the room was scorching.

Five minutes into Rudy's speech the house was crammed to the walls, but all the energy had dissipated.

In other words, Rudy flopped. Big time.

What did he talk about? Imagine the safest possible thing for a politician to talk about at CPAC.

Duh, Ronald Reagan.

So, who did Rudy spend his whole speech talking about? Duh, Ronald Reagan. Without reviewing my notes there were at least 5 direct quotes. "Peace through strenght" was the Reagan line Rudy kept regurgitating.

He didn't talk about marriage, he didn't talk about abortion and he didn't talk about judges.

Namely, he stayed far, far away from everything conservatives question him about.

But, sure, people say it was a "great speech." (Except if you saw Wayne's speech to compare it to. Rudy didn't hold a candle to that.)

Blah. He discussed, at length, welfare reform and education. More completely safe topics. Sorry, being good on vouchers doesn't give you a whole lot of street cred with the conservative crowd. It's sort of like a given you need to be good on that.

And, yes, Rudy, you cleaned up New York (no small task,I know) but it's pretty clear you aren't up to fighting our nation's culture war.

I'll have more to come. Ivy and I are working on a long CPAC presidential wrap up and you can be sure to hear more from me on this.

Do you know anything Rudy has said about gun control in the last few months?

My take on the speech matches the writer's.

I talked to friends in the hall who also agree. One was sitting next to a Giuliani supporter from NYC who afterwards admitted it wasn't a very good speech.

I watched the speech twice. It was worse on second viewing. What I posted to you earlier is not much different then Amanda Carpenter`s take. Rudy gave a hackneyed speech. To me he looked uncomfortable and overplayed his Reagan card big time. Rudy and Reagan come from opposite ends of the political spectrum. Rudy didn't fool anyone with his impersonation of a conservative at CPAC convention today.

Sorry to say, but I think your phrase applies to the top-3. What a miserable bunch :(

Y'know, if you folks are bound to stop a Republican candidate who doesn't agree with everything you believe, but who has massive name recognition with even folks who do nothing but play video games and watch CSI:Anything, in favor of the kind of judges and cabinet members that Hillary! might appoint, well, you just go right ahead. Good luck with that.

Even though I'm not a Rudy supporter, I'm curious. You've obviously been opposed to his campaign from the start, so if you thought his speech sucked so bad the first time why in the world would you watch it again the second time?

(Giuliani)...it's pretty clear you aren't up to fighting our nation's culture war.

Wrong. Has this guy even bothered to pick up a bio sheet reviewing Giuliani's actions on culture issues?

As mayor of New York City Giuliani made Times Square family friendly by getting rid of the sex shops that pervaded the area. He also threated to cut off funds to the Brooklyn Museum over displays offensive to religious groups. What is this guy talking about? He doesn't know a thing about his actual record.

So I guess you'll be happy if Rudy wins the GOP nomination and is beaten by Hillary or Obama? Would that then prove your point?

I remember the game where Rosanne Barr sang the National Anthem. I didn't rewind it to see it again.

To borrow a quote from the Chief FReeper himself:

"Sorry, but as a red blooded traditional American conservative I cannot possibly imagine myself supporting a gun grabbing, gay marriage supporting, illegal alien pandering, first amendment usurping abortionist for president."

MegaDittos for me!
