Does ex-NYC mayor Rudy Giuliani now oppose taxpayer funded abortions?
From National Review Online:
On the issue of abortion, Simon focused on Giulianis recent comments on judges. When pressed what is a pro-lifer like Simon doing flacking for an abortion-rights advocate? and asked if he had any assurance that Giuliani wouldnt support taxpayer-funded abortion as president, Simon told National Review Online, I have an assurance that he is in favor of the Hyde amendment (which forbids such taxpayer subsidies).
Update: A Giuliani spokesperson clarifies for the Hotline: "It's not a change of position. The Hyde Amendment is a current law and, as such, he respects it."
So: Giuliani would not work to change it -- he doesn't neccessarily support it -- but his agenda for governing does not include any changes to the law as it's currently enforced.
you can keep your guns!
hooray!
So... taking away from people is off the table also I would assume from this if logic dictates.
You can support abortion and yet oppose government funding of it without flip-flopping.
Except that Rudy has a long history of fighting for public funding of abortion. He didn't just take a position...he insisted that NYC pay for abortions for anyone who wanted one but couldn't afford to murder their baby out of their own pocket.
When Giuliani tries to justify his past stances on abortion and gun control, why do I feel like Bill Clinton is talking.
Giuliani has made another semi-concession to the Right.
Does this recent semi-concession make him more palatable to conservatives or does it open more questions than answers?
They will never understand as a prosecutor this is how he views all laws on the books. Prosecutors don't pick which laws to enforce, they are to enforce them all when they charge someone with a crime. To me this is what guides Rudy and he doesn't make a promise to overturn a law if elected because unlike some candidates he understands a President does not have the authority to overturn laws. I do believe that Rudy will veto anything he feels would be bad for this country unlike the current President.
He's only said that like 100 times but there are those who just don't want to like the guy.
As a Nooo Yawkaa, I admire what Rudy has accomplished for the city, it is such a better city now than it was before he became Mayor in 1993. His accomplishments here go way beyond all the 9/11 'hero worship' accolades that the MSM heaps upon him ... 9/11 was NOT Rudy's defining moment to us, the full 8 years of his Mayorship is.
That being said, if the POTUS candidates come down to Hillary vs Rudy, then Rudy has got my vote easily. If it comes down to Rudy vs any Dem, then Rudy has got my vote easily. If the GOP primaries come down to Newt vs Rudy, then Newt gets my vote, easily.
As an aside, Newt has sorta-kinda indicated that he is 'studying' a run for POTUS in an interview with the NY Post yesterday. Take as much time as you need, Newt, the primaries are a full year away, and there is no reason to jump in right now and catch all the nasty flack from from this 24/7/365/4year election 'process' that our country has become.
MM
what works for one part of the country may not work for other parts of the country, its called "states rights"
Rudy will support anything if he thinks it'll get him elected.
He and Hillary are birds of a feather, and not far apart (if at all) politically.
B.S. newby. Take your moral equivocation someplace else. This is a conservative forum...whatewver the hell part of the country you happen to be in.
Well it's not going to stop. This is a conservative forum. Not a GOP cheerleading site. I'm opposed to liberalism and liberals. All of them, democrat and Republican.
thats what he has said about guns, "what works in one part of the country might not work in another part of the country"
OK...I see now. Let me take my foot out and say welcome to Free Republic.
