WOO HOO!
Now that you mention it, I seem to recall thinking Fred and McCain were politically close or personal friends or something. But now that Fred isn't dealing with a Senate colleague anymore and is concerned about the country at this critical juncture, I'm betting he's no McCainiac now (if he ever was).
Is there such a man? Yes, there is: Fred Thompson. He has been consistently conservative on social policy and his help in getting John Roberts confirmed as Chief Justice to the Supreme Court was critical. Thompson has a record in the Senate and he voted conservative, according to the American Conservative Union, eighty-six percent of the time.
Although a conservative senator, he is well liked in the Senate. He also knows the Senate very well, although he has not been a member of the Senate for five years. Thompson also supported John McCain in 2000 and was his national co-chair. He has managed to be friendly with McCain and yet a strong supporter of President Bush. In short, he would be a unifier for the entire Republican Party and should receive the strong support of McCain, if Thompson won the nomination. The most intriguing aspect of a Thompson candidacy, however, would be his extensive and successful experience as a movie star, a regular on two very popular television programs (programs, pointedly, that are particularly popular with women voters), and now as the replacement for Paul Harvey, whose radio program reaches tens of millions of older Americans every single day.
There is another Republican who did a regular radio commentary, who appeared before the American people for years on a very popular television program, who before that was a successful movie star, and who had left politics for several years before running for president. Who? Ronald Reagan, of course. He spoke to the American people with a radio commentary during the years between his defeat for the 1976 nomination and his run for the 1980 nomination. He was on General Electric Theater, a highly rated show, for years before entering politics. President Reagan honed his skills as a communicator at every single level.
Fred Thompson would naturally appeal to a couple of voting groups who do not naturally gravitate to Republican candidates: women who watch Law & Order, senior citizens who listen to and trust Paul Harvey, and young voters who have seen Thompson's many action movies. Fred Thompson also is an impressive and brilliant communicator. He also exudes a confidence and a leadership which people naturally seek in a president in troubled times.
Everybody will except the "you know who's."
You don't say?
Yeah, is he really a tough conservative or does he just play one on TV? Governor Terminator/Kennedy comes to mind.
Heh, well, better my way (Rudy as Veep) than her way (Rudy as Prez)!
Now, here's a guy I could vote for.
Sure, I have a difference with him here and there on a particular issue, but I agree with about 85-90% of his positions, which is more than sufficient.
I can't say the same about certain other candidates.
I trust Hunter would whip him into shape on that issue.
Looks like a wash. Good on the last one, OK on the middle one (I'd always rather see skilled workers than the poorest of the poor coming here,) no on the first one.
Listen, I think one reason Thompson left the Senate was the shameless, despicable committee behavior of skunk John Glenn, who sold his soul for that little boondoggle space ride. Bought and paid for by Bill Clinton, there was little Thompson could do to thwart John Glenn's unethical tactics.
I don't know when I've been more disappointed in the outcome of Senate Hearings, but John Glenn was tasked with concealing Bill Clinton's link to illegal Chinese campaign donations (think Riady, Huang, Chung, Lippo, etc), from Fred Thompson, and he did it.
And just what web site is that, ibelieveeverythingiread.com?
Please, please, choice of words. The mental image. The humanity!
He was just a patsy.
The word used on FNC was that he was "seriously" considering the Presidential run.
I am loving this....he will wipe the floor with the dims, he will lead this county with honor and he may even save the Republic.
While there are still some good options for us if he doesn't go through with it, this is a real man. A man that I could stand behind without reservation and one that I think could politically stomp anyone that the 'Traitor party' could ever come up with.
For my grandchildren and for our country's sake, please run Fred........you will have my vote.
Well, yeah, Kelsey is a Republican but hasn't weighed in as a candidate as far as I know.
Howlin, I have to ask. Have you had any inside information and were you expecting this type of announcement from Fred Thompson??
The pay may not be great, but it is the role of a lifetime. ;)
