The FOX television talking heads were gushing over the usual suspects- Mitt Romney, Rudy Gulliani and John McCain- when the results of the South Carolina Republican straw poll rolled in and left the pundits stuttering and speechless in mid sentence.
In a surprise result not predicted by any of the national political commentators, California Congressman Duncan Hunterfinished second with 110 votes behind Rudy Gulliani's 123 votes with 71 of the 75 precincts reporting.
Arizona Sen. John McCain was third with 86 votes, former Massachusetts Gov. Mitt Romney had 59 votes, Kansas Sen. Sam Brownback had 68 votes, and Arkansas Gov. Mike Huckabee rounded out the front-runners with 18 votes.
The underdog Hunter has now taken first in an Arizona straw poll and second in the South Carolina.
The charm of Duncan Hunter is that he is authentic. In a world of hyper-branding and packaging... where politicial speeches sound as if they are the result of focus group studies... Hunter comes across as unscripted, unrehearsed and firm in his beliefs.
...And do not dismiss his unwavering support for Border Patrol Agents Ramos & Compeon. It is the stuff that resonates with people.
As I wrote in The Washington Times back in November, Hunter has a message that connects with republican voters...particularly those in early primary states such as Iowa, South Carolina and New Hampshire. His message is one of peace through strength, conservative social values and conservative illegal immigration policy.
I'm all in favor of South Carolina voting for their favorite candidate, and other states doing the same. As for negative energy, the lies and misrepresentations need to be exposed -- especially on candidates who are only conservative when it is convenient, such as McCain and Giuliani.
You created the images. With rudy, no one has to create a man in drag who wants to be president of the US.
So you're fighting real pictures with the one you can conjure up...smooth, for a two year old.
I doubt you'll like him after some of the comment he made on China.
I don't support Hunter because he has no fiscal conservative credentials and I think he's wrong on trade issues.
I would vote for him over any Democrat in a heartbeat, however.
I think the push for him at this forum is borne out of despair that no social conservative is a frontrunner for the nomination. That doesn't mean support for him is futile. But I do think we should be realistic about his chances and be thinking about what the backup plan will be on February 6 if he's no longer in the hunt for the nomination.
Protectionism never solves trade problems. Hunter is way off when it comes to international trade.
I'm not sure if this is correct, but another freeper was saying that Hunter was the only one not to use funds to directly campaign for this straw poll.
Don't quite understand the obsession some have here of Rudy in a dress. From what I know it was a worthwhile fundraiser and not a night out on the town..
Duncan Hunter is conservative. Your guys aren't. Logic would dictate that on a conservative forum, conservatives, including the owner of the forum, will "tear down" liberals. This site was built upon tearing liberals down.
HUnter is a man of the people, and the others, hollow logs, bureaucratic appointees with "name recognition" purchased by long trem RNC and lobbyist support.

1. Right to Life Amendment:

The Human Cloning Prohibition Act of 2005, which would prohibit and criminalize efforts at reproductive cloning.

The Parent's Right to Know Act of 2005, which would prohibit federal funding to carry out federal family planning programs in which service providers in the project knowingly provides contraceptive drugs or devices to a minor, except in specific circumstances.

The Unborn Child Pain Awareness Act of 2006, which would require abortion providers to notify women who want to have an abortion 20 weeks after fertilization that the evidence suggests their unborn child feels pain and they may request anesthesia for their unborn child in order to reduce or eliminate the pain.
I have also supported human life protection efforts with the following votes:

I supported the Fetus Farming Prohibition Act, banning the practice of fetal farming, the creation of embryos specifically for the purposes of scientific research.

If we vote for a man, Hunter will win. Simple as that. A debate between Hillary or Ears Obama and Hunter would be a massacre.
I think that Hunter's moderate record on spending, while I strongly disagree with it, might help him in the campaign. He'll be able to drop all sorts of "I voted for such and such for the children" bits, which will help him capture more of the moderate vote.
This latest anti-Hunter talking point is retarded. It was an emergency, last-minute vote that about 150 representatives missed. Hunter lives 3000 miles away from DC.
Grass Roots support, ain't it a biatch? Hey Rudy will do well in a NY straw poll, don't go all "reducio ad absurdum" yet!
But Duncan has two grass root polls notched into his gun stock! Rudy, Zero. Rudy don't like guns.
It was an EMERGENCY because Schiavo was being starved to death. Only one of the most important pro-life votes in that session of Congress. What was Hunter doing?
That's probably true, because I don't think Hunter has a lot of campaign money on hand. This is likely to get some more, though.
It's not hard to observe that the support for Hunter is strong among those who support him. They almost seem desperate to support him. I'm sure nearly every Hunter supporter in the county turned out in order to make a statement. I don't think anyone here, even the most ardent Hunter supporter, would argue that Hunter is polling first or second among South Carolina voters as a whole.
The results of this straw poll are only important in that they can be used for campaign propaganda purposes. Rudy supporters could equally argue that the assertion that he can't win in the South are now obviously false.
I'd argue that the whole thing is as bogus as extrapolating an FR poll and saying it reflects the country as a whole. It doesn't. It doesn't even reflect conservatives as a whole.
