Ghezzi said little is known of the people who built Chankillo. They pre-date the Incas by centuries.
The Inca were the newest of the great Amerindian civilizations (Inca, Maya, Toltec/Aztec), being only about 100 years old when the Europeans arrived. They also are supposed to have come from relative obscurity, and ascended to the largest empire in the Americas very rapidly.
