NEW YORK — Maybe it was the umpteenth coke-dealing anthem or soft-porn music video. Perhaps it was the preening antics that some call reminiscent of Stepin Fetchit.

The turning point is hard to pinpoint. But after 30 years of growing popularity, rap music is now struggling with an alarming sales decline and growing criticism from within about the culture's negative effect on society.

Wish I had "License to Ill".

That's the only Beastie Boys CD I have.

I have some idiot in the neighborhood who likes to drive by at 2, 3 or 4 in the morning with enough bass to rattle my windows.

So do I.

I have things that make a LOT of bass, and can REALLY rattle windows. They can break engine blocks, too, but since I am sweet and civilized, it can only be an intelectual 3:00 AM exercise.

Once again, a true testamonial to the restraint and civic resposibility of the American Gun Owner.

That said, it's only a matter of time....

I've got a few of those as well. A mite more effective than the spike strip I've been dreaming about laying in the road. ;)

Heck, I have everything from Veggietales to Nine Inch Nails to Garth Brooks to Casting Crowns on my iPod. I don't think your taste is strange.

Same here. I've got everything from Beethoven, to Louis Prima, to Anthrax, and Anne Murray, and everything in between. Just to name a few.

Rap is to music as etch-a-sketch is to fine art.

The Etch-A-Sketch requires some rudimentary skills-One could possibly explore melody, rhythm, balance, and harmony with one. One COULD explore rhythm with Kruschev's shoe on a table, I suppose, but at least THAT had a message.

A Day-Glo silk screened Elvis on black velvet would be my comparison. Vulgar by definition. Cheap. Sluttish. Tawdry. Demeaning. Foul. Devoid of a message.

Rap/Hip Hop is used by some as an offensive weapon, when used in conjunction with a kilowatt of bass. They KNOW most people hate it.

Just like THEY hate my bagpipe casettes...

Yes, the blues was enjoying a surge of popularity at that time.

It's arguable which came first - the popularity of blues or the popularity of white (mostly British bands) playing heavily amplified blues.

That I know man...but she did that one bit...can't remember the name but it had the lyrics, "man from mars." I think it was "Rapture." First mainstream rap to get airtime.

Oh, man. It's about time.

That sonic flatulence has been running about 29.5 years too long.

Warm thoughts of HEAT/105 .

They'd love the bass.

Once.

Aerosmith's career really wasn't "revived", they were for the most part only heard on AOR (Album Oriented Rock) stations, like WRIF in Detroit, or WLUP in Chicago, back then. After collaborating with Run DMC with the reissue of "Walk This Way" (which initially came out in 1977), Aerosmith became more of a mainstream act, heard on AOR later called Classic Rock, and Top 40 radio, and some hits appeared on soft rock stations.

I don't think Usher can be classified as rap.

Can't someone figure out how to use a Tesla coil or somethin', to blow up speaker voice coils? I'd hid one in my front yard bushes, and blast every nitwit that drives by.

How about Gilbert and Sullivan?

My favorite has always been "He be an Englishman."
