Right panics over Giuliani's big lead
The Australian ^ | March 01, 2007 | Tom Baldwin

RUDY Giuliani has opened a lead of up to 20 per cent over his declared rivals for the Republican presidential nomination, sparking near panic among Washington's pundits that a thrice-married supporter of abortion, gay rights and gun control could create such enthusiasm in a party dominated by Christian conservatives.

The former New York mayor's slew of strong poll results among likely Republican primary voters is battering the conventional wisdom that Mr Giuliani is too socially liberal and combustible to win the nomination. Some commentators insist the numbers cannot last and that Mr Giuliani's popularity will evaporate once voters are reminded of the positions he has taken and his tarnished record as an arrogant mayor with dubious connections in New York City.

Others are trying to find a reverse gear for their opinions because no Republican candidate in modern history has been so far ahead at this stage in the contest and then failed to win the nomination.

In Virginia, where Republican activists gathered for their annual dinner to hear him speak at a Marriott Hotel on Tuesday, it does not take long to discover his appeal.

[snip]

Audience member Richard Brown said he would consider voting for Mr Giuliani. This might not be remarkable, except that he served as a US navy pilot on the same ship as Senator McCain in the Vietnam War and is worried that his former comrade is now trying "to grasp more of the right wing of our party".

Asked if he was worried about Mr Giuliani's social positions, he said: "There's not a candidate with a clean skirt out there. Hell, I've been married myself three times."

This country is full of immigrants now--- that don't even speak english. And it's getting worse every year. If we ever get a Republican President again, I'll be totally shocked.

Jim Gilchrist of the Minuteman Project is a declared candidate for their nomination.

Since the Repubs haven't been able to come up with a decent candidate, it's Giuliani by default. If he is the candidate he gets my vote, because he's better than Hil or Obama.

I personally consider people who don't vote because they are whining over their issue not being satisfied as traitors.

I don't get my talking points or marching orders from the media or "Rudy's RINO's".

I'm very concerned there will be a panic over Rudy's big hair-do, women everywhere trying to copy it.

If the MSM becomes convinced that Rudy might win the Republican nomination, they will do everything they can to prevent that, because they know he could beat any Democrat.

I am not panicked, because Giu is not a conservative and thus, he will not be nominated. End of Story.

When polls like these come out the first thing to do is to see if there is a DriveByMedia connection. Maybe the DriveByMedia is trying to tell us what "mainstream" Republicans like on social issues.

..early inflated poll numbers are due to three things:

name recognition
name recognition
and name recognition...

If Rudy survives until GigaTuesday 2/5/08, he wins.

Nobody else will beat him in California, New York, New Jersey, and Illinois.

The Dems are in a much better position given the political climate.

You're not allowed to tell the truth to Rudybots.

"Especially in light of the fact that Newt has said he won't jump in if Rudy has a big lead."

Can you provide a source for that? I'm not doubting you, but that doesn't make sense.

I am a pro-life Catholic, US Army vet, lifetime member of the NRA, have been an active worker in the 2000, 2004 and 2006 campaigns, always carry at least a S & W 38, have a pix of our President and his lovely wife above my desk and will vote for Rudy {if he wins the primary} without reservation.

I'm also in a state of picnic and will get a little more mellow.

In my opinion, Rudy is the fast, yet fragile car, the debris of which is found about half way through the race, wrapped around a tree.

On what do you base your opinion?
