Couric handwringing over green backlash

Katie Couric
WASHINGTON – Oh, the things multimillion-dollar news readers worry about …

In her CBS blog, the day after the Oscars, anchorwoman Katie Couric frets that Hollywood's overwhelming embrace of Al Gore and the politics of global warming might prove to be a political setback with the hicks in the sticks.

"But as the throngs of celebrities greeted Al Gore as a secular saint, I wondered if this might usher in a backlash against environmentalists," she speculated. "It wasn't too long ago, afterall, (sic) that environmentalists were decried as tree-huggers, and former President Bush rallied against them – trying to say it was the spotted owl against logging interests and jobs in the West."

Couric also wonders out loud if the Academy Awards Best Documentary Oscar presentation to Gore for his "An Inconvenient Truth" might start the public thinking global warming is a "liberal" cause.

"The Oscars may give Gore's critics ammunition to reject a school of thought that's been validated by countless scientists worldwide," she mused. "Some people I know latched on to a recent Gore global warming conference that was canceled because of a snowstorm."

Couric left no doubt about where she stands on the issue.

"But my fervent hope is that Hollywood's embrace of Al Gore doesn't give people an excuse to condemn and mock the effort – and oppose taking steps that we as a society need to take to deal with the issue of climate change," she said. "Some people find anything trendy repugnant, but this is a trend that's really important."

Couric's network broadcast is currently mired in third place among the Big Three. She took over for long-time anchor Dan Rather.

Katie, here's the deal, people are EVEN LESS INTERESTED in your opinions than they are in Algore's.

One can only hope.

Anything that cost so much, impedes progress, does nothing to solve the so called problem, and is backed up by a truckload of lies is by definition a "liberal" cause. Gore had nothing to do with that.

Nope. I was mocking and condemning it long before the Oscars.

BTW, I wonder if Katie is buying carbon offsets. Her footprint must be huge.

Since a blizzard or severe cold snap seems to follow Algore wherever he visits, I see they have switched from "global warming" to "climate change"

Katie's obviously picked up her copy of the talking points

Here in Indiana we have friggin climate change about every 3 days, LOL

Hey Katie; what about the millions dead of starvation who could've been saved had DDT been used to spray crops? Tell me about the DDT scam?

What about the impending ice age? You were wrong just thirty years ago and you're wrong now.

What about the jobs lost to rampant uncontrolled regulation. Tell us why SAND is carcinogenic Katie?

>
> Last night, Al Gore's global-warming documentary, An Inconvenient Truth, collected an Oscar for best documentary feature, but the Tennessee Center for Policy Research has found that Gore deserves a gold statue for hypocrisy.
>
> Gore's mansion, [20-room, eight-bathroom] located in the posh Belle Meade area of Nashville, consumes more electricity every month than the average American household uses in an entire year, according to the Nashville Electric Service (NES).
>
> In his documentary, the former Vice President calls on Americans to conserve energy by reducing electricity consumption at home.
>
> The average household in America consumes 10,656 kilowatt-hours (kWh) per year, according to the Department of Energy. In 2006, Gore devoured nearly 221,000 kWh-more than 20 times the national average.
>
> Last August alone, Gore burned through 22,619 kWh-guzzling more than twice the electricity in one month than an average American family uses in an entire year. As a result of his energy consumption, Gore's average monthly electric bill topped $1,359.
>
> Since the release of An Inconvenient Truth, Gore's energy consumption has increased from an average of 16,200 kWh per month in 2005, to 18,400 kWh per month in 2006.
>
> Gore's extravagant energy use does not stop at his electric bill. Natural gas bills for Gore's mansion and guest house averaged $1,080 per month last year.
>
> "As the spokesman of choice for the global warming movement, Al Gore has to be willing to walk to walk, not just talk the talk, when it comes to home energy use," said Tennessee Center for Policy Research President Drew Johnson.
>
> In total, Gore paid nearly $30,000 in combined electricity and natural gas bills for his Nashville estate in 2006.
