It's probably essential to explaining how she is uniquely qualified to comment on this story. Also, Obama self-identifies as black, while I'm not sure how Mrs. Washington-Williams self-identifies.

Well it appears that the only difference is that Barack Obama's mother was white and Ms. Washington-Williams' was black, so I guess that must be the reason. ;)
