Poland expects U.S. military help to improve security in return for missile defense deployment

WARSAW. FEBRUARY 27. INTERFAX CENTRAL EUROPE - Poland is likely to agree to deployment of elements of the United States' missile defense program in Poland if this improves the country's military security, Polish Prime Minister Jaroslaw Kaczynski suggested Tuesday. The prime minister held a meeting on the issue with United States Ambassador Victor Ash late Monday. During the meeting, he said, he informed the American diplomat of his opinion on the matter.

“There are certain threats against Poland that will probably be executed and Poland has to have an answer to that,” Kaczynski said during an interview on public radio PR1, without indicating where the threats might originate. Poland is a potential target of terrorist attacks from Islamic terrorist groups as Osama bin Laden once named Poland as a target.

Meanwhile, Russia's Strategic Missile Forces Commander Colonel General Nikolai Solovtsov said earlier in February that his forces would be able to hit elements of the US National Missile Defense (NMD) system if they are deployed in Poland and the Czech Republic. However, the remark was later dismissed by American Deputy Secretary of State Daniel Fried as incomprehensible and not backed by the Russian government.

Kaczynski said talks over the missile defense system would likely begin shortly.

“I think the negotiations [over possible implementation of the elements of the U.S. missile shield in Poland] will begin in a period of time counted in weeks,” Kaczynski said.

That's what allies do...they assist each other. If we ask Poland to host part of a missile defense system it's reasonable for Poland to expect our help in matters important to her.

The poles should get all that they can from agreeing to host a US missile defense system in their country.

Poland's history is replete with examples of how alliances have failed them, the smart move is to get alot in exchange for becoming a target and get whatever beforehand.
