Washington. Republican presidential hopeful Rudy Giuliani addressed his Democratic past on Tuesday and offered one reason for his political conversion the economy and taxes.
"I don't think anything separates us more right now between Republicans and Democrats than how we look at taxes," the former New York mayor said. "What we understand as Republicans is that, sure, the government is an important player in this, but we are essentially a private economy. What Democrats really believe ... is that it is essentially a government economy."

"It sure as heck wasn't abortion. Or gun rights. Or First Amendment rights. Or federalism"
Rudy and McCain are the only two Rep.'s that still wont sign the standard pledge to not raise taxes. All the others running have signed it.
Every Republican since Reagan running for President has signed it, only two have refused. I wonder why?
---Yeah, I can see myself with a gun on the 6 train every morning (hysterically laughing here)! ---
So which is it? Guns are unecessary and unimportant or Rudy really is pro-gun?
Dude, you're just having ~way~ too much fun. :)
I just need to figger out how to do this and make money...
Money's overrated.
Don,
I dont think Oceanview is arguing with the relative benefit of RTKBA, the fact is, and I live in NYC too, there really isnt any crime here anymore to scare off or dissuade with guns. I think we have the lowest crime rate of any of the top 25 cities in the US. You have to go looking pretty hard to find any.
You switch to Hunter all of a sudden?
LOL
No, it couldnt.
I think some of you are stuck back in a 1970s or 1980s view of NYC. The crime rate here is now so low its almost non-existent.
I understand that in the vast majority of places in the US, the same kind of policing is not possible as it is in a concentrated metro area. that's why these places have decided on their own laws for carry.
I will admit however - that the situation in cities (like DC), which have BOTH ineffective policing and where its impossible to carry a gun legally - they've got big problems.
Exactly. I think I understand why a lot of people dont appreciate Rudy. They dont understand the difference in this city as far as crime and the economy is concerned. Certainly not if they have visions of needing a gun on the subways! (BTW, this is me joining you in laughing hysterically)
Last stats I saw on it, a few years back, NYC's per capita violent crime rate was among the lowest of any metro area in the US -- it was between those two crime-infested metropoli Provo Utah and Rancho Cucamonga CA on the list.
Like your example, I've seen a cabbie blow a gasket and run a bike messenger off the avenue, get out of the cab and attack him with a hammer (he obviously had under his seat-in one such instance that I witnessed). Fortunately for the Rasta bike guy, a mob of people jumped the cabbie and wrestled him off the bloodied bicycle guy. If that cabbie had a pistol, no doubt he would of used it with probably one dead cyclist as a result.
Guns in the city is a whole different ball of wax based upon my personal experience.
On the other hand, the need to own and being able to use a weapon(s) out here in Podunksville is pretty self evident.
---No, the idea of a girly girl like me walking around the city with a gun cracks me up. There are plenty of NYPD around to protect me, thanks.---
Guns are not important to you, personally, so right to keep and bear isn't a serious issue? Well, I'll give you an A+ for honesty!
Thats not what any of us were saying. Your arms had to reach around the block to put those words in our mouths.
Newt Gingrich:
"He is much stronger than anyone could have predicted six months ago," said former Republican House Speaker Newt Gingrich from Georgia. "New York is four times safer than it used to be. It's one of the greatest achievements of government capability in the 20th century. And Rudy just has to go out and say, 'This is who I am. If you think the world's dangerous, and you need a tough guy
that's me.' "
Just what do you think the greatest achievement of government capability in the 20th century means, you dimwit.
