Gay Republicans seek recognition (Rudy Mentioned)

NEW YORK (CNN) -- These days, it seems as if it is good politics for conservatives to address the annual convention of gay Republicans.

"Keep pushing the Republican Party because you're pushing it in the right direction," New York City Mayor Rudy Giuliani told the Log Cabin Republican convention over the weekend.

That is a far cry from the 1992 Republican convention, when the party's far right wing attacked the gay community.

"Bill Clinton and Al Gore represent the most pro-lesbian and pro-gay ticket in history," said Pat Buchanan at the 1992 GOP convention.

The convention crowds responded with enthusiasm. But now, some Republican candidates are taking a less confrontational approach.

That's true, and that's why I feel (and Goldwater felt) that Reagan's association with the Religious Right began the slow destruction of the Republican Party, which is manifesting itself now.

I believe you called Goldwater a "phony baloney". I think that title most certainly belongs to Reagan, the actor. He did make some great improvements to the American economy, but he was not a pure supply-sider, having raised taxes on corporations. He played the part of a moral watchdog, while being divorced and having gotten his second wife pregnant before marrying her. He claimed the he didn't leave the Democratic Party, they left him - well, nobody goes from being a New Dealer to a supply-sider without changing their own principles quite a bit.

Goldwater never minced words, he didn't play politics, he just spoke the truth in a blunt fashion. That's also why he lost in a landslide...people weren't (and still aren't) ready for that kind of politician. The people claim they want "straight talk", but when somebody gives it to them, they tend not to respond very well.

No, not wrong. Some churches have performed marriages for gay couples. As to whether they are blessed by God, they are according the faith of those involved in the ceremony. That's their personal relationship with God. Whether God approves is not for you or I to say.

Also, may I point out the huge irony of your tagline:

I agree wholeheartedly. So why on Earth would we get government involved in marriage, a thing which is most certainly God's?

We agree on a lot. We obviously don't agree that gays are an issue that prompts panic legislation from National and state governments while fanning the flames and rallying the masses for battle on both sides over this non issue.

I just don't see the same effort from many socons on other more important issues and too many of them don't have a clue what's going on in the world but seem ready to die for the anti-gay cause.
