Don't get me wrong. Our young men fighting over there are AWESOME. They do everything we ask them to and more. The problem is that of Islam and Arab v. Persian hatreds that go back millinea. It is, to use a phrase from Hayek a "fatal conceit" to think that we can transform that culture.
We need to figure out a way to declare victory and get out.
That is not what happened in Chicago in the 30s when the FBI "surge" left. Instead the local police force was retrained, and inserted in strategic locations. The FBI gave the police force the breathing room they needed to get organized (and showed them that the situation was not hopeless). Same thing here.
I pray your right, I would not mind one damn bit to be wrong on this one.
I pray he is right, too. I feel like the tracker on "Lonesome Dove" who said "this is Mr. Jim's horse." When Robert Duvall said "I hope you are wrong" he said "I hope I am too....., but I ain't."
From the President's address to the governors today:
If we leave before that country can govern itself and sustain itself and defend itself, there will be chaos. And out of chaos will come vacuums; and out of vacuums will come an emboldened enemy that would like to do us harm. I like to remind people that if we leave Iraq before the job is done, the enemy will follow us here. And if our job is to protec this country, it's important we get it right in Iraq.
So I made a decision that I think is more likely to succeed than any of the alternatives that were presented to me. And I know you're concerned about the funding for your troops; so am I. I hope out of all this debate -- and by the way, there is -- you've just got to understand, here in Washington, I do not believe that someone is unpatriotic if they don't agree with my point of view. On the other hand, I think it's important for people to understand the consequences of not giving our troops the resources necessary to do the job.
Well their societies seemed to be able to help themselves. I just feel like we are the international suckers - and yes I do have a problem with muslim countries.
Thanks. It's interesting that they are doing that.
