You simply don't know what the hell you are talking about. The Republican party of 94 completely delivered on 9 of the 10 items contained in the Contract with America. On the tenth (term limits) they could not get a large enough majority, but their was a vote.
You represent what is becoming known to be a "sound-bite" conservative. You say what sounds good to the angry masses, but has no basis in fact or truth.
The fact is, most of you should simply shut up, or learn your history. I don't mean to go off on you, but your post is sadly becoming typical on this forum, with nonsense being accepted as fact.
Do better, and forgive my anger, because it aint directed at you alone.
The biggest problem for the GOP is that in 2008, its possible 51% of the people will want the War on Terror to be declared "over" so they can pretend we are back to a peace time election. Everything is so FAST these days that 5 years is like 15 years in the early part of the century. If nothing happens between now and Oct 2008 to change this dynamic, I fear that people will just, like a child, deny the facts of a situation and create their own reality. Vote for any Dem who will declare the War On Terror over and won and start talking social issues.
If that is accurate, Hillary might be the hope for the GOP....I still believe conservatives would literally vote for anyone but her.
You're correct in speaking about the immediate aftermath of 1994, but obviously you've not thought through the long-term adherence to the principles put forth in that proposal.
Broadly speaking, one might characterize the Contract with America's themes as: fiscal responsibility, job creation, legislative restraint, tax code fairness and national security. At best, the GOP now owns the last two. On the first three themes, the GOP has IMO strayed far from the Contract. Now people might reasonably disagree, but should not be subjected to vitriol as a result. Which brings me to my next point...
The fact is, most of you should simply shut up, or learn your history. I don't mean to go off on you, but your post is sadly becoming typical on this forum, with nonsense being accepted as fact.
What I find mildly humorous is egotistical blowhards who try to silence other posters, yet are substantially wrong in their own analysis. If "nonsense being accepted as fact" is sadly typical on this forum, perhaps you should write your opus. Or save yourself the trouble and just resurrect one of the previous ones.
That is exactly right.
There wasn't anything wrong with kjo's post.
Sure, the Republican Congress - - 12 years ago! - - did what they said they would do and followed through on the Contract. But that Contract was supposed to represent more than just a game plan for the first 100 days or whatever. It was supposed to be a blueprint for a future of ongoing reform, transparency, and conservative principles.
By 2006, the GOP looked more like "the old boss" than the righteous reformers of 1994, and the electorate noticed.
good point.
Exactly correct, all that was promised was a vote on the floor that all could see. And the 94 GOP delivered and 9 out of 10 passed. Bring back the 94 GOP!
