Caddo Parish Commissioner Jim Morris was elected to fill a northwest Louisiana state House seat Saturday, but races for two other seats went to runoffs.

Morris, a Republican, got 69 percent of the vote against four opponents for the seat vacated by the death of Rep. Roy "Hoppy" Hopkins, complete but unofficial results showed.

Morris, a Republican, was running in District 1, vacated by the death of Rep. Roy "Hoppy" Hopkins. Richard "Richie" Hollier, a Democrat, was second with 826 votes, or 18 percent of the vote in the district, which includes precincts in Bossier and Caddo parishes.

Democrat Ruth W. Johnston had 9 percent and Republicans Marc Weddleton and Michael Page Boyter 3 and 1 percent respectively.

In District 4, opened by Cedric Glover's election as mayor of Shreveport, Patrick Williams and Larry Ferdinand were headed to a runoff in a four-man, all-Democrat race.

With all 26 precincts reporting, Williams had 1,323 votes, or 44 percent, and Ferdinand 768 votes, or 26 percent. Calvin "Ben" Lester Jr., had 569 votes, or 19 percent and Reginald Johnson 325 votes, or 11 percent.

In southwest Louisiana, complete but unofficial returns showed Elbert Lee Guillory and Ledricka Johnson, both Democrats, in a runoff for the District 40 seat vacated by the election of Donald Cravins Jr. to the state Senate.

A runoff had been expected, since six candidates ran. Guillory had 2,159 votes, or 39 percent, Johnson 1,297 votes, or 23 percent, and Bradford Jackson, an independent, had 1,099 votes, or 20 percent. Roderick "Rod" James had 9 percent, Chris Declouette 7 percent and Jim Darby 2 percent.

As closely divided as the nation as a whole is, every little bit helps.
