Keeping tabs on Gov. Bill Richardson as he seeks the Democratic nomination for president ...
THE NEVADA SHOCKER: A rare event indeed took place Wednesday at the first Democratic presidential candidate forum of the season. Eclipse? No. Bigfoot sighting? No. Then what? Richardson missed a primo photo op. The candidates ... gathered together on stage at the Carson City (Nev.) Community Center to start the forum, and Richardson an experienced hand when it comes to landing in front of a camera was conspicuously absent. ... He made an appearance at another gathering just before the event and was likely en route to the center. The shock was temporary: The group of candidates came out on stage again ... for another photo opportunity, and Richardson made sure he was there. J.J.
GIVING PEACE A CHANCE: Taking on the role of party peacemaker at the Wednesday forum, and weighing in by saying Barack Obama should denounce David Geffen's slap at the Clintons, provided a nice bump for in-need-of-name-recognition candidate Richardson. The gov's calming comments were included in Obama-Geffen-Clinton spat stories in The NewYorkTimes, the LosAngelesTimes, USAToday and on The Associated Press all over the country.-- L.L.
TIME'S UP!: Richardson didn't merely exceed the time limits set up for the forum candidates: He steamrolled over them. Candidates each had two minutes to introduce themselves, three minutes to answer each of the three questions from moderator George Stephanopoulos, and one minute for closing remarks. At about the 6-minute mark in Richardson's opening comments, Stephanopoulos was trying his best to signal Richardson that his time was up. "I was told two minutes," Richardson told the crowd, "but I've been watching all the other candidates. And they've gone a little long." Stephanopoulos responded: "It's been an elastic two minutes today for a lot of people." J.J.
