Keeping tabs on New Mexico Gov. Bill Richardson as he seeks the Democratic nomination for president ...
# There's not much better in the buzz-making early days of a campaign than an entire page devoted to your underdog candidate in the New York Times. Richardson got it Sunday, featured in the "Questions For" page in the Sunday magazine. Often-prickly interviewer Deborah Solomon seemed to like Richardson, and he got off some good lines: Does Secretary of State Condoleezza Rice resent his diplomatic troubleshooting and consider him annoying? "I would think so," the governor said. On his recent weight loss, Richardson said: "I think the American people want their leaders to be and look healthy. I've lost about 30 pounds in five months. I need to come down another 10 pounds." The feature runs with a full-length photo and Richardson looked trim in a dark suit. L.L.
# The Washington Post's political blog had an item about Richardson stealing money from Hillary Clinton, sort of. It seems Beth and Ron Dozoretz, heavyweight Democratic donors and good friends of the Clintons, gave Richardson a fundraiser at their home in Washington on Friday. The Richardson camp said the Dozoretzes are longtime Richardson friends. Clinton's people said the party doesn't mean the couple has chosen sides. L.L.
# Richardson's speech at the Democratic National Committee meeting Saturday got lots of attention. He was in the Los Angeles Times, the Chicago Tribune, The Washington Times, the Des Moines Register and the Baltimore Sun, among others. The Chicago paper pointed out Richardson was introduced via a letter from Linda Lynch, of Columbus, N.M. Lynch's husband, Tribune reporter Paul Salopek, got out of a Sudan jail thanks to Richardson's intervention. L.L.
