Cronkite opposes religious influence Venerable news anchor appears at event urging greater separation of church and state By Kim Vo, MEDIANEWS STAFF Article Last Updated: 02/24/2007 02:54:02 AM PST
Faith-based initiatives. Intelligent Design. Gay marriage. Terri Schiavo.
Alarmed by what they see as religious groups' growing influence on government policy, a consortium has launched a public awareness campaign to defend the First Amendment's vow that "Congress shall make no law respecting an establishment of religion or prohibiting the free exercise thereof."
"That cherished freedom is
under severe attack," the Rev. Welton Gaddy said before an audience of about
700 people in San Jose. Friday's event included an appearance by newsman Walter Cronkite, who endorsed the new national campaign called First Amendment First.
It calls for houses of worship to stop endorsing political candidates and for states' tax dollars not to go to any charity that discriminates in its hiring or requires people hold a certain faith to receive services.
It also says science and health policies should be based on scientific data, "not religious doctrine," and that schools shouldn't promote any religious preference.
So far, 103,000 people have signed a petition calling for America to commit to such practices. The campaign hopes eventually to deliver that petition to the policy makers for the 2008 presidential candidates, said Ari Geller with First Amendment First.
Americans are conflicted about the interplay between faith and politics, according to a 2006 poll by the Pew Forum on Religion & Public Life. Half of Americans think it's appropriate for churches and worship houses to express political views, and 46 percent want them to "stay out of political matters."

idiot
Crokite marchesto the beat of the communist party and the associated members of the media demagogs.
I pay a good bit of attention to whichever direction Cronkite points. That way I can be 100% sure the opposite direction is the exactly right path to take.
These anti-Christian zealots are the ones bending and perverting the 1st amendment.
They are infringing upon the rights of people to worship freely.
UNLESS you are a Muslim and want to pray in school. Then it is OK.
Who cares what Kronkite says? Why does it seem that American Intelligentsia hates religion.
Although I too believe in separation of church and state ,certainly religion will play a part in all elections,as does the theory of right and wrong, and most right and wrong comes basically from religion.
We all know that murder is wrong, why then is abortion not considered wrong.
Lying is wrong. Why then did Bill Clinton get elected and Hillary is now running.
We all know that Saddam Hussein was an insane muderous killer who was responsible for perhap a million deaths. Why then do some Americans feel he should have been left in Iraq?
I've always said that the core of liberalism is the hatred of God.
PS- The words "separation of church and state" never even appear in the Constitution.
No, what senile, pompous, pathetic old fart Cronkite opposes is American power, freedom, equality for conservatism and defending America and Western civilization against leftism, socialism and Islamic fascism.
Cronkite is a worthless traitor. I despise him. And Blather too.
Ii will not mourn when this commie passes.....
cronkite,rather,the old media,fonda are has beens,this ain't the 60's anymore,and that's the way it is;)
He has lost his mind through natural attrition and refuses to acknowledge it.
Yep, he's a leftist.
The myth of "Separation of Church and State" is a LIE!
God hating leftist, yep, yep yep.
Cronkite has not changed his thinking one iota since he was a young man, I see.
Grew up during the Depression, saw the "anti-Fascist" war up close, and nowhere was there a God for Walter. But there was its substitute, international socialism, which made a satisfactory object of worship, so of course, there was no room for supernatural dieties.
"Is he still bloviating?"
In an interview Cronkite said he wouldn't have retired from CBS so soon if he'd known he was going to live so long. He wished he could still "shape the news".
Because they do.
