Israel seeks all clear for Iran air strike
telegraph.co.uk (excerpt) ^ | February 24, 2007 | Con Coughlin

Excerpt -

Israel is negotiating with the United States for permission to fly over Iraq as part of a plan to attack Iran's nuclear facilities, The Daily Telegraph can reveal.

To conduct surgical air strikes against Iran's nuclear programme, Israeli war planes would need to fly across Iraq. But to do so the Israeli military authorities in Tel Aviv need permission from the Pentagon.

A senior Israeli defence official said negotiations were now underway between the two countries for the US-led coalition in Iraq to provide an "air corridor" in the event of the Israeli government deciding on unilateral military action to prevent Teheran developing nuclear weapons.

If you mean Bush, forget it.

That's a shocking indictment. I'd roll my eyes and move on were it not for your standing. Do you think a self-esteem-soaked high command contributed to our going into Iraq undermanned expecting to be welcomed with open arms?

...nor do they have any refueling tankers in their inventory.

Reportedly. I am sure they have a lot in their inventory that isn’t public.

If Israel needs to cross Iraq and requires US approval to do that, they need to strike before the end of the Bush administration. I think Bush will allow it. The Dems would not. It is also true that the situation in Iran is not going to get better with time. If Israel is going to strike the sooner the better.

If the Democrats try to interfere with Israel's actions they will pay a political price.

...Israel is negotiating with the United States for permission.

As if they need it. They'll just launch, notify us, and do it. Like what would we do? Shoot down any IAF F-15's that show up eastbound? I highly doubt it.

"Mass communication specialist'

Well, that's a new one to me. A new one to the USN, too.
Looks like they've merged photographer's mate, lithographer, journalist and illustrator draftsman ratings into a new one.
It became operative in July of last year.

Wonder what the insignia will be.... a mouthpiece?

Ah, no, "the new MC rating badge consists of a satellite orbiting a globe with four lightning bolts." Sure, the patch has to be 4x5 inches to get all that in, but MCs have the biceps for it. LOL

My real question is how much support is the US going to give. AWACS? Jamming & refueling? Or are we going to send B-2s from Whiteman to do a lot of the dirty work.

This is going to happen.

Jordan would be the only one needed and best chance for compliance.

They will be past Jordan in 10 minutes and Jordan in incapable of doing anything about keeping the IDF from overflying them. the IDF would choose purposely to avoid Syria completely.

Bad idea.

The U.S. should quietly hit the cascades -- set them back ten years.

If Israel doesn't do it, we'll advertise the fact that it was they who gave phoney intel on Iraqi WMD to the Brits, and thence, to us? Just wondering ... Google on "A Clear Break" and Wolfowitz and see what Woofie,et al were saying, in 1996, to Netanyahu. Very innerestin.

It's one of the unspoken reasons why we're in Iraq in the first place.

I've always said this also.
