Israel seeks all clear for Iran air strike
telegraph.co.uk (excerpt) ^ | February 24, 2007 | Con Coughlin

Excerpt -

Israel is negotiating with the United States for permission to fly over Iraq as part of a plan to attack Iran's nuclear facilities, The Daily Telegraph can reveal.

To conduct surgical air strikes against Iran's nuclear programme, Israeli war planes would need to fly across Iraq. But to do so the Israeli military authorities in Tel Aviv need permission from the Pentagon.

A senior Israeli defence official said negotiations were now underway between the two countries for the US-led coalition in Iraq to provide an "air corridor" in the event of the Israeli government deciding on unilateral military action to prevent Teheran developing nuclear weapons.

"(One has to wonder why we call Israel our "strategic partner in the Mideast" when we haven't and won't use them.)"

We haven't and won't use them because the Arabs hate Israel. Having Israel carry out the strike rather than the US alone (or with a NATO country) is a bad idea in my book. There's a reason why the first Bush didn't allow Israel to retaliate when it was struck with missiles from Iraq. Otherwise, it would've fractured America's alliance with Arab states and/or sparked instability in those countries. I don't see how either of these is a good thing.

As much as I would love for this airstrke to happen, and for us to give the Israelis permission for a strike, I think the permission must also come from the Iraqi government.

That's ridiculous. The Saudis don't want the Iranians to have nuclear weapons anymore that we do.

We've got Iran surrounded by our positions in Iraq and Afghanistan. It's one of the unspoken reasons why we're in Iraq in the first place.

When we look back on this decades from now, we'll see this was the strategy all along...and it's succeeding.

Surround and contain. Divide and conquer.

The day before the raid, the New York Times will have illustrated strike maps and a list of vulnerable Israeli sites.

I never said they did. Would the Saudis rather have the U.S. or Israel bomb Iran?

If they'd rather have Israel do it, then they can give them fly-over permission.

I think we should loan Israel the Enola Gay- fully fueld, fully armed.

Perhaps Israel is making this 'request' public knowledge in order to send a clear message to Iran that they are done playing games. I imagine Mahmouid would be poopin his burka at the thought of an Israeli air campaign against him.

Of course they don't want Iran to have nuclear weapons. But Saudi Arabia would be seen as illegitimate among its people if it were to be seen as sitting back while Israel attacked Iran. Saudi Arabia has to remain somewhat anti-Israeli for the regime to stay in power. And while I'm not fond of the intolerant form of Islam that is the state religion there, the alternative isn't democracy, it's jihadism.

Thank you. And King Abdullah would have to be suicidal to allow the latter to take place.

I think these little "news releases" about Israel and the US are designed to make Iran panic and do something first. Iran is going down and "their" only hope of winning, with the help of allah, of course, is to strike first with all they got. We of course know that.

By the way, what ever happened to "Divine Strake"? It would be great if secretly, this was ready to go and is already on hundreds of warheads in the US and Israeli arsenal ! ! ! !

Quite right, in fact the Saudis are Sunnis, and the Iranians are Shiites. I think the Saudis would let Israel use their air space.

I hope they do eliminate the Iranian's nuclear capability.
It seems that if Israel would do it, with the Pentagon's permission to fly over Iraq, that would give some room for the U.S. in that we didn't actually do the bombing, just allowed it to happen.

America doesn't need anyone else to lead the charge - and we need not follow anyone.

We would be doing this for our own best interests.

One thing as usual when Israel TRIES to deal with other nations in a military manner will happen. The U.S. State Department will try and stop it. Stay home and out of it this time Condi. PLEASE! If we had stayed out of Israels business for a while Israel would have likely solved a lot of problems for us. But we were always to busy trying to force them to be nice to terrorist.
