Upbeat Hillary Clinton Delivers S.F. Lunch Speech
CBS 5 SAN FRANCISCO ^ | 23 FEBRUARY 2007 | AP

(CBS 5 / AP) SAN FRANCISCO -- An upbeat Sen. Hillary Rodham Clinton strode onstage at the Sheraton Palace Hotel in San Francisco on Friday, leading the applause for herself and her supporters. The Democrat mocked her own inability to sing and recalled her misjudgments on health care in her husband's first term.

This is Clinton in her favored political habitat, what her campaign calls the "conversation." It is a hybrid of former President Bill Clinton's freewheeling speeches, with a dash of President George W. Bush's more tightly scripted forums.

Studiously spontaneous, it is engineered to showcase her as warm, funny, accessible -- and to shatter preconceived notions of the chilly, calculating former first lady.

"The goal of our campaign events is to let people get a firsthand look at Senator Clinton so they can draw their own impression of her," said campaign spokesman Phil Singer.

Call it Hillary's Listening Tour 2.0 -- an updated version of her tactics during the 2000 campaign for a New York Senate seat.

But this time, she is doing more talking than listening.

At the San Francisco luncheon fundraiser and "conversation," Clinton delivered a speech, mostly about Iraq, for 21 minutes, then took seven questions on topics ranging from education to housing to health care to voter disenfranchisement.

The questions appeared unscripted, and elicited lengthy answers from Clinton, though they broke little ground.

She noted affordable housing is "disappearing fast" in places like San Francisco, and pledged to hold the line against what she said were Bush's attempts to further cut government programs for it.

On abortion, Clinton said the Bush administration has "taken their political positioning much further that we've ever seen before," and added she is pressing for legislation stressing pregnancy prevention.

The appearance before donors ensured an audience of 900 that was almost exclusively supportive, and elicited a true softball question.

"I want to thank you for running," one man said. "I think you're the most courageous and brightest and have the most experience to lead our country." What about her experience at the White House, he wondered, "most influences you to be able to lead our country out of these bad times?"

Clinton acknowledged her failed attempt to pass sweeping health care reform early in her husband's first term, then launched into a long overview of her education while first lady on "what we can do and how fast we can do it and how we have to keep committed."

Unlike her husband, who famously strayed from his lectern to roam audiences like Oprah Winfrey, Sen. Clinton stays largely static. Like a hitter in the batter's box, she stands, hands clasped, pivoting only to take questions from audience members scattered throughout the hall.

Like her husband, however, she runs late -- 23 minutes on Friday.

And like Bush, the senator shook hands and took pictures with the biggest donors behind closed doors.

Most of Clinton's "conversations" have not been fundraisers. In Iowa and New Hampshire, anyone could get a ticket from a local campaign office or affiliated group, Singer said.

The Bay Area attendees donated from $250 up to the legal maximum of $4,600 to attend, and received box lunches for their checks.

Several protesters did manage to get in and briefly disrupted the event. Five were arrested and charged with disturbing a meeting.

LOL...studiously, engineered spontaneity with the goal of losing the perception of being calculating. Sounds like she's not selling it.

What a crock of verbage.

If it is engineered, how can it spontaneous?

It only give the appearance of being spontaneous. It, like most other venues where Lady Rodham has granted an appearance, is very engineered and highly scripted.

Her handlers and she wouldn't have it any other way.

Interesting that Shrillary feels like she needs to campaign in California, considering that CAlifornia went Democratic in the last I don't know how many elections.

Is she here because she actually fears Obama's candidacy? I doubt it. Why is she bothering with this?

Key phrase: appeared unscripted. Notice that even the author of this puff piece didn't go so far as to claim the event was unscripted, on that it appeared unscripted.

When Hillary was doing her book tour, she was in Germany. She gave an interview to Des Spiegel. That interview never showed up in the US (English) MSM.

I saw a few comments she made in that interview, but they were Internet translations from the German. They were highly socialist in tone and content.

It might be worth having that article/interview translated from German into English to see what she really was saying.

Interesting that Shrillary feels like she needs to campaign in California,

CA has moved their primary up toward the front of the pack. She needs a good showing there to tell the rest of the contenders that the prize is her and it is already won.

Hitlery's handwriting is very revealing. There is a definate downward turn or slant in each of the last letters of each word. Upward swings such as in the letter "e" mean compassion or thoughtfulness to others. Downward, like in "y" means cold and calculating. I remember this from a handwriting class I took once. I am no expert, but do remember that.

From her book tour comments in 2003:

Hillary Clinton Attacks Bush,U.S. - Urges a "Globalized and Integrated World"

International News Analysis ^ | 06/17/03 | Toby Westerman

Posted on 06/19/2003 8:37:14 AM CDT by bedolido

U.S. Senator Hillary Clinton (D NY) has attacked U.S. President George W. Bush, and questioned U.S. intelligence effectiveness in an interview published in the online version of the German newsmagazine Der Spiegel.

...

Praising her husband's close relationship with European leaders during his period in office, Clinton declared that "for eight years we were on the right course to a globalized and integrated world - which is coming, one way or the other."

Clinton publicly revealed the foreign policy thrust of the Democratic Party in a remarkable moment of candor, a position Democratic leaders have not made clear to the public, but which is keenly understood and supported by Clinton.

Not only is a "globalized and integrated world" inevitable, it is a foreign policy priority of the Democratic Party.
