The average New York City resident is rude, pushy and brash. They expect and demand every conceivable service from the government and complain when their tax dollars are taken to fund those very services.

They drive like animals, cutting people off and tailgating and pulling out in front of you with no sign of a signal.
Their driving mirrors their attitudes.

They think anyone from outside the Five Boroughs is some kind of rube or Country hick. They are anti-gun to the core, thinking guns represent criminals or Ku Klux Klan activists or beer drinking "hillbillies" who marry their cousins and drive around in pick-up trucks (Nota Bene - the quotes reflect their employment of the term "hillbilly". I prefer "real Americans" as far more descriptive and any fo their flaws are eclipsed by those of their urban detractors.).

As an American of non-English ancestry whose ancestors came from continental Europe - but who considers myself first, last and always nothing BUT an American, I can also say a good number of them are so intimately wedded to the customs of their European or Asian or South American or African forefathers that they can be hardly considered Americans at all.

Someone criticized me for making comments in light of the fact that the World Trade Center attack occurred on New York City soil. My strong suspicion is that the majority of those killed and injured in that attack were from outside the Five Boroughs.

Again, my comments should not be construed to describe ALL New Yorkers - many of them are very fine people. But those New Yorkers have been overshadowed by the large number of individuals I just described.

Giuliani is in many ways the quintessential New Yorker.

Well, maybe outside the tri-state area...

I suspect the characteristics you've described there would apply to residents of most old, large cities. New York just happens to be the largest -- and one of the oldest -- of them all . . . which means you see these things more in New York than in any other place.

One of the biggest problems the city has is that it's always been a city of immigrants. Immigrants themselves are no big deal, but when you have that many of them in one jurisdiction -- and they bring their dysfunctional views of government with them from their home countries -- then you're really asking for trouble.
