I loved this story! Hope the elderly gentleman realizes he did a good thing.

Having lived in South America for 5-years, this story will cause me to sleep tonight with a smile.

Someone died and I can't stop laughing! I keep picturing an old guy with black socks, sandals and those really oversized glasses with the dark lenses that flip up and down choking a guy who thought they would be easy targets!

"Retired US tourist"
OK. Where do I get a job as a "US Tourist"? I'd love to be able to retire from that.
(Who writes these moronic headlines anyhow?)

Somehow I knew that the gentleman was ex-military. Even if it was long ago...
Kudos, and my best wishes for his health and safety.

The tourists left on their Carnival cruise ship after the incident and Hernandez said authorities do not plan to press any charges against them. OMG, if he had done that in Louisiana or Floridah, even if he hadn't been charged with a crime, the perp's mother would own his house. God bless Costa Rica.

Wrong tour bus. Those were American tourists, not soft, weak Europeon ones.

But if he's a retired tourist, what was he doing in Costa Rica in the first place.

Once you get the upper hand on any assailant, your only option is to render him no longer a threat. Dead, he is no longer a threat; alive, he may pull a gun and shoot you, or recover and hunt you down.
Better tried by 12 than carried by six. Finish the ba$tard off! < /rant >

In a related story the retired member of the U.S. military aged about 70 atated that he would attend the March 17th protest in Washington and hoped to put Jane Fonda in a similar head lock.
"I'll show those wimps at FR how to run a counter-protest" he was quoted as saying.
