Teen's Dad Says 'Anti-Muslim' Literature Handed Out in Class Isn't Freedom of Speech

The father of a North Carolina ninth grader who was given 'anti-Muslim' literature in class says the material handed out is not an issue of free speech, but of slander and defamation.

A representative from the Kamil International Ministries Organization, a Christian group based in Raleigh, was invited by a teacher to come and speak to the class. He handed out literature class that compared the teachings of Jesus with accusations against Islam's Prophet Muhammad; Muslims Jesus as a prophet of God equal to the prophet Muhammad.

Among the materials handed out was a pamphlet called "Jesus not Muhammad," as well as one entitled, "Do Not Marry a Muslim Man." The latter pamphlet compares parts of the Koran with those of the Bible, such as:

—Husband, beat your wives and deny them sex." (The book of Islam, Koran 4:34)

—"Husbands, love your wives, even as Christ also loved the Church and gave Himself for her." (The Holy Bible, Ephesians 5:25)

It warns women to not be lured into marrying a Muslim man, even for his "dark good looks, education, financial means, and the interest he shows in you."

"You may be excited that you found the 'tall, dark, and handsome man' you have been looking for. His sweet words and attention may blind you regarding the power, importance, and influence of his culture and Islamic faith," the pamphlet says. "Because in the United States, we have freedom of religion, he may agree that you can remain a Christian and you may think there will be no problem with such a marriage. But do not be fooled and become a victim of his religion, Islam, which has very oppressive rules regarding women's status and rights. Such marriages will never be out of trouble."

Why? Freedom of speech if for unpopular speech, popular speech does not need it.

Hmmm... I wonder people would feel if someone were in the classroom handing out anti-Semitic materials? Or anti-Catholic tracts?

Better to bar entry to all such people.

The classroom should not be for indoctrination- people say this all the time on this forum and I agree with that. Conservatives rail against the liberals and the teachers' union for indoctrinating children with their brand of the truth.

This is no different. And it just goes to show you that in the end, many people are simply hypocrites. They don't want Al Gore in the classroom preaching his global warming spiel but they don't mind the local religious nut coming in and spreading his own brand of hatred. Double standards are BS.

In case you don't know, public schools were started to teach pupils to read the BIBLE. Without Christianity we would not even have the PTA.

Agree with you 100%. Public school teachers shouldn't be allowed to use their classes for this stuff, period.

Freepers should imagine the shoe on the other foot & consider how they'd feel if this teacher had invited in a Muslim who handed out material critical of Christianity or Judaism.

Let's at least try to be consistent here. If anybody wants their kids to be indoctrinated one way or another about any particular religion, they are welcome to do it at home or send them to a private school, but taxpayer supported public schools should just stick to academics.

Yeah right, and when you find a public school that isn't pushing some agenda besides reading, writing and math drop me an e-mail ok !!!

That's right Obie Wan! Why when I was a kid, I'd go out and do really stupid things. It would make my dad mad as hell. He'd whip out his belt and get ready to beat me. He'd ask me why I did it and I would reply:

'Johnny did it too!'

My dad would just put the belt down and say 'Oh, well, that's ok then...' because that's the only rational thing to do when faced with such a stunningly logical reason. Little Johnny does it so that makes it ok for me to do it too.

I can see your dad was a lot like mine...

/sarcasm

So you prefer our children be ignorant of different religions?
There's nothing wrong with studying religions as long as the study is about what the religion says without distortion.

And you honestly think that's what is going on now? Schools are not pushing certain agendas? Do you think schools aren't already teaching Islam?

Well they are, chickie, and you can be damn straight it is NEVER put into a negative light for fear of lawsuits.

They teach homosexuality but do you think they ever balance it out by having a dying AIDS patient come in and explain their said existance?

Our kids are being indoctrinated and it's this hands-off attitude that righteous conservatives have that will totally kill off public schools.

"Send them to a private school". How quaint.

Pretty strong words from an avowed apostate. I also seriously doubt that he has never stepped into a mosque.

I would not be so sure.

If he has never been to a Mosque it means that his parents were none practicing as well.

This would mean that his association with Islam is mostly intellectual and cultural (and possibly only peripherally cultural).

His parents could possibly have shielded him from the darker side of Islam. His parents may have been Lebanese who left before the radicals took over that country. He may know a Islam that is entirely different than the Islam we face in war.

Why? are you saying this from a constitutional point of view or personal choice?

I'm saying it because there are some things that you don't need at school. Stick to the basics.

It is simply comparing religions. What is wrong with that. Isn't the class called "comparative religions"

The story says the information was passed out at a 9th grade orientation seminar.

Don't need to hand out tracts about the "religion" called Islam.

Just telling historical truth is d-mning enough; that's why Islam
demands the severed head of anyone willing to tell the truth about it,
e.g., :
"Jihad in the West: Muslim Conquests from the 7th to the 21st Centuries"
by Paul Fregosi

So what.
I didn't say it was passed out for a class just that a class with that info would be called "comparative religions"
Orientations show what is available in a class.

No one should ever have free speech. A Muslim told me it isn't Halal.

That's a very dangerous form of hypocrisy, VVV. If you agree that this public school teacher had the right to indoctrinate other people's kids about Islam one way here, you hardly have the standing to object when another teacher chooses to indoctrinate your kids about Islam or any other non-academic agenda in a way that is not compatible with your beliefs.

Whether you realize it or not, you are shortsightedly sacrificing protections for Christians & Jews here by saying it's OK for these teachers to do this ever at all.

Here's a revolutionary idea: let public school teachers inculcate their own kids with their values & stick to teaching other people's kids academics.
