Just one final statement.
I've been sitting here getting more and more fed up with all of this talk about these, pieces of machinery, having no legitimate sporting purpose, no legitimate hunting purpose, people, that is not the point of the second amendment!
The second amendment is not about duck hunting, and I know I'm not going to make very many friends saying this, but it's about our right, all of our right to be able to protect our selves from all of you guys up there.

It is just so sad that all of this hoopla is necessary (and I agree that it is necessary) because there is a group of weiners in this country that want to take guns away from law-abiding citizens.

He will probably survive. David Petzel of Field and Stream made similar comments about "assault rifles" and hunting about 12 years ago during the Clinton years. He ate crow and is still around.
I just wonder if while he was writing his original post if he ever got that nagging voice in the back of his head that said "something isn't right with what you are saying".
My bet is that he did, but just ignored it.
Running his post by even the people that he was out hunting with before he hit that "submit" button probably could have saved him, but since he had been writing for what...30 years...he probably just went for it and didn't think of the ramifications.
In the end though he did manage to point out that even among hunters and gun owners there is much misunderstanding between different types of firearms based mostly on features of the weapon, even though the bullet itself can be used in a "hunting" rifle.
And also pointed out misunderstandings in what the right to keep and bear arms means.
This writer did a great job, it is a very good, very thorough article.

Here are my comments on the matter:
I was, as any 2nd Amendment supporter and freedom-lover would be, enraged at Zumbo's blog comments. I own an AR and an SKS, and an AK is on the way soon, and I don't view myself as a terrorist. The use of the word "ban" was especially galling.
I don't hunt - never have, and probably never will. Nonetheless, I can see the forest for the trees and have defended the choice of others to hunt, and the RIGHT of anyone who so chooses to be able to purchase and use all of the tools of their SPORT.
Zumbo has apologized - kinda, sorta (its really more of an explanation than anything else). Despite that, I agree with most commentators including the author of the article above that Zumbo still doesn't get it ("it" being why we have and need a RKBA and why allowing or promoting a split in the gun-owning community is suicidal for all of us) and this is a further cause for annoyance.
HOWEVER, there is in this very dark cloud (of Zumbo's creation, to the delight of anti-gun blissninnies and statists everywhere) a silver lining. It is not very thick, and it is quite tarnished, but it is there. What IS the silver lining? Zumbo freely admitted in his apology and other comments that he was (and still is) largely ignorant about ARs (and other EBRs). OK, fine - ignorance is no crime (though spouting off as if you know something about a subject when you don't, AND when you damned well ought to know the effect of your statement is nearly unforgivable). He's said that he'll be learning about, hunting with and buying an AR. OK, that's a good start. Ted Nugent is taking him hunting with an AR, and will do for him what I do for ignorant fence-sitting newbies all the time - educate him. I can see forgiveness if Zumbo agrees - after **really** learning about not just the function of the AR and other "ugly" (in his opinion) rifles, but also after learning about the purpose of the 2nd Amendment and why ALL gunowners need to stick together - to use his still good reputation with the hunting community to educate THEM, to help thousands or tens of thousands of Fudds who still think like he did last week to realize and understand why so many people like "black rifles," why such rifles - and the right to purchase them - are critical for freedom in this country, and to educate them as to why hunters and other gun owners HAVE to stick together against the antis. If Zumbo can use this monumental screw-up to convert thousands of Fudds to the status of true firearms rights defenders, then this will (IMHO) make sufficient amends. But he's got to DO it - merely apologizing or explaining won't do it.
It also wouldn't hurt to have him called before the House Judiciary Committee by some pro-gun member, and to testify as to his previous ignorance and his new-found realization of "The Truth" - and to let the Congresscritters know that they are at least as ignorant as he was (probably more so), followed by an impassioned plea to kill HR 1022 and any other anti-RKBA bills.
When there is life, there is hope. Zumbo ain't dead, and he CAN make amends...he just has to try REAL hard.
All I believe I need to add is that H.R. 1022 (the new and improved, never going to go away) Assault Weapons Ban that has been filed is ready to be the most serious threat to everything we stand for...
Now we are going to see if those NRA A and A+ ratings, both Republican and democrat count for something...
I am not holding my breath...
And if anyone believes that when things like this come up, it may be time to bury your guns...
Maybe its better to keep them close by...
