NEW YORK (Reuters) - A U.S. federal jury found that Microsoft Corp infringed on audio patents held by Alcatel-Lucent and should pay $1.52 billion in damages, Bloomberg News reported on Thursday.

The report said that Alcatel-Lucent had accused the world's biggest software maker of infringing on patents related to standards used for playing computer music files.

I dont know the particulars or the merits of the case. Patent law today, especially in the IT field, has become something of a joke..

Alcatel-Lucent isn't a mom and pop shop. I'm quite sure they have representation just as good as Microsoft. 20+ billion in yearly revenue buys good lawyers.

Microsoft has never had an original idea in the history of the company.

Take a look at their history and all you see is a company that watches others innovate - then they steal and mass produce the solution pushing all others aside.

I'm not a fan of Google - but I like seeing Microsoft get its come-up-ance...

MSFT contends that Fraunhoffer (? spelling)in Germany, is the rightful licensor (whom they paid $16 million to years ago) and they are are therefore exculpated by that agreement.

Microsoft is good at taking others' ideas then marketing and integrating them. They don't create much of anything, but they do reasonably well at making things work together.

...but they still have a large staff of very expensive R&D people. One wonders what they do all day.

"Microsoft Corp infringed on audio patents held by Alcatel-Lucent"

Fingernails on the chalkboard.

You don't "infringe ON" patents, you "infringe" patents!

Maybe Lucent can pay back all those employee stock options and pensions depleted from their great pump and dump scheme. -- Oh wait what was I thinking, the board members made a bundle on that and didn't even get caught.

Microsoft is bloated and lazy. While I don't necessarily like the politics of Google, Apple, etc., they understand what innovation is, as opposed to re-packaging the same tired programs and concepts.
