Rudy Giuliani: 'A Woman Has the Right to Choose' Abortion

Republican presidential hopeful Rudy Giuliani met with firefighters and police officers in this early voting state Wednesday, using the forum to reference the Sept. 11 terror attacks, which earned him national attention.

"The first people that arrive on the scene of the bombing or the anthrax attack ... it's going to be one of your brothers or your sisters or you that gets to do it," the former New York mayor told a crowd of about 200 emergency workers. "Your ability to do it well will once again determine if we save lives - save America."

Giuliani compared firefighters and police to uniformed military personnel and said the federal Department of Homeland Security needs to ensure first responders "have the training and protection you need to defend your country."

Giuliani has a tough road ahead in South Carolina, which is to host the first Southern primaries in 2008. His moderate positions on gun control and support for abortion rights do not sit well with the state's Christian conservatives, who accounted for a third of the 2000 GOP primary vote. Those voters swung heavily to President Bush that year, giving him a 2-1 ratio margin over Arizona Sen. John McCain, who was viewed as soft on abortion.

On Wednesday, Giuliani reiterated his own position.

"I'd advise my daughter or anyone else not to have an abortion," Giuliani said. "I'd like to see it ended, but ultimately I believe that a woman has the right to choose.

"I believe that you've got to run based on who you are, what you really are and then people actually get a right to disagree with you," he said. "And I find if you do it that way, even people who disagree with you sometimes respect you."

Giuliani also said he's not concerned about a recent poll that showed rising numbers for Democratic opponents.

"We're a tremendous amount of time away from an election," he said. "We haven't even gotten to a primary yet. The best thing we can do now is organize."

He did. He also dumped wife number one, wife number two and supports killing the unborn, grabbing guns, global warming coercion and grabbing guns.

You don't get to decide what's best for women.

Well then, by all means, let's legalize murder as long as the person making the decision to kill is a woman. Why should government be thinking it knows what's best for women?

Is your point that Rudy sucks, or that those things had a bearing on his dropping from the race in 2000?

when talking about rights of individuals, slavery is much, much worse than abortion IMO. a slave is aware of the injustice to him and living out the injustice, an aborted child wasn't ever aware of their injustice.

Somebody rips the limbs off a small child and crushes their skull and rib cage...are you saying that the fact that they're not aware of their position under the law somehow makes that less horrible?

and God sorts out the good and the bad people. now could we just have all our liberty back?

Yeah, and you know what? I'll bet God sends slaveholders straight to Hell, so let's give that judgment back to Him and bring back the freedom to own an African.

Oh, wait, and then we could get rid of the laws against murder...we'll all feel a lot more free, and if some guy kills you, you can die with the satisfaction that God will get him for it.

Get a grip...if a fetus is a human, he or she should have protection under the law just like you.

You seem to have trouble understanding what strict constructionism is about. It's not imposing your own metaphysical beliefs on the country, it is actually interpeting the text of the Consitution, and doing so narrowly.

Great, please cite the part of the Constitution where the right to abort is found.

a single woman can sleep around - be a whore - and government doesn't put her in jail for that. it's morally wrong...her and God will work it out, not her and the government.

Yes, but the point is not "this is immoral, let's ban it, the point is that either abortion is absolutely morally defensible (no more wrong than having an appendectomy) or it is absolutely wrong, because it's killing a human. There is no middle ground.

everyone has their different opinion...but since there are objective differences between that human being and a born human being (even if one considers the fetus a human being), there will always be a debate about it.

If a bunch of people decided it was best for society to act as if thunder was the sound of God bowling, would you have this same attitude about it? Would you consider it a matter of debate?

There is not a single feature of the fetus that leaves any scientific doubt that it is a human life. I defy you to offer me one. Your post is relativistic BS.

Abortion/infantacide has been worldwide since the beginning of time and will be worldwide until the end of time...Abortion is a totally unsolveable issue IMO.

OK, take the words "abortion/infanticide" out of that and replace it with murder, genocide, wife-beating, burglary...

We haven't wiped those things out yet and never will...should we legalize them?

Then you are paranoid.

Of course a woman has a right to choose. It's the only way it should be. Let the woman decide for herself according to her own morals what she believes on this devisive issue. It's the only approach that makes the most sense and that's why the supreme court decided the way they did. Why should the people of a state decide to make a personal health decision for women. Why should the state be telling women what they can and can't do when it's a decision that doesn't even affect them personally and the entire nation and world have views that are all over the board. Pro-lifers don't agree on what should or shouldn't be legal, pro choicers differ widely too. Any woman who disagrees is just going to hop the state lines and go somewhere else where she can get it done. It's totally pointless and a waste of time to try to overturn Roe and get this issue back to the states. I'm sure women will be able to get abortions easier because charities will be set up all over the country with abortions and transportation and lodging fully paid for any woman that wants one, because people will feel sorry for the women having their rights taken away.

Every woman should have the right to opt out of putting their life and health at risk by continuing a pregnancy. Pregnancy is like a major surgery (probably 10 times worse and more risky) and everyone has the right to decide major health decisions like major surgery for themselves. It shouldn't be up to states to decide these issues because it places grossly unfair burdens on women. It's total inequality because women have to suffer and men don't because of burdensome, health altering and life altering laws imposed by the state.

That is nonsense. Either it is a child or it is not. My argument is that, if it is considered a human life then no one at all has a right to kill it out of 'feelings'.

Indeed!

A BALD EAGLE has more legal protection than a human being!

A woman should not have to suffer because she has been raped.

As you noted, she already HAS 'suffered'.

My complaint against the 'rape - incest' loophole is:

Where are all the MEN being JAILED for these 'crimes'?

No perp - no abortion.

Consider: "If Rudy wants to see it ended" then it is not a right, now, is it?

Nope...

It's a privilege the Gummint GIVES a woman.

Abortion is a totally unsolveable issue IMO.

Huh?

"Slavery is a totally unsolveable issue IMO.", was said a lot, no doubt, way back then.

But along come DRED SCOTT and, instead of permantly ending the debate, actually ramped it up!

Abortion's DRED SCOTT is coming....

Abortion is unique, can't be compared to anything else.

About 1.5% of all abortion patients report being victims of rape or incest, so the question is largely irrelevant.

Yeah.... 'report'....
