The reason for the low BMI is obvious...in Midtown, the subways are inconvient, and buses and taxis useless since you can't move an inch. So you have to walk, and usually walk briskly, since you are ALWAYS in a hurry in NYC.
Me... offended?!
NYC car rental agencies are booked solid on weekends ... unlike most car rental agencies that are busy during the week, typically having to offer discounts on weekends to encourage business.
Do you remember the scene in Moscow On The Hudson where Robin Williams goes shopping for the first time in America. In the coffee aisle, so many choices of coffee he has a breakdown. Funny!
And water comes from a bottle.
And walking the streets at night to support their crack habits. I see a lot of "skinny" people in the "core area", which seems to be the highest crime area crowded with vagrants in every major city.
Raid what? there's no food there. The food is all at the packing plants in the industrial section of the city.
Of course, you can always try "pick some wheat" growing in a field, but unless you show up at just the right time when it's ripe, you aren't going to fill your belly on it, and even should you get lucky and come across a ripe wheat field still standing, and do manage to swallow down (after chewing for hours) a few mouthfulls of wheat, you will never attempt to do that again.
The fact is, there isn't much growing in the fields that you can eat. It all has to be processed

Fools? How many Americans grow their own food?
They may look thin, but they are fat heads. Why else would they pay a fortune to live in squalid lofts and give a fortune for overpriced food at Gristides? I refused to live there, and have never regretted it.
The only people that may be a little sucessful raiding fields are those who live in the south where they vegetable fields are. But you can bet those farmers also watch their fields much more closely too. Northern State people are SOL if they are thinking they will be able to flee the city into the country in search of food.
Correlation is not causation.
Now, I'm a country boy too, and we certailny can survive, but to be fair cities have done pretty well over the last, oh, 6,000 years.
They aren't really a major innovation. :p
I was referring to those who will invade your home to take what YOU have!
When I lived in Manhattan on a full time basis, I maintained a perfect body weight. As soon as I bought a car in the suburbs, I started to resemble Totie Fields! I think all people who live in huge cities like NYC, Paris, London are skinnier than the average suburbanite.
OMG Totie Fields! That's a blast from the past! I'm sure you didn't look like her at all. Maybe you felt like it at times. But I know when I lived in the Suburbs I felt like I was her every day! UGH! I hated it. I have lost 25 pounds since I moved back into the city and have kept it off.
BMI, feh!
Why would the food stop coming in from the country? If anything, the country seems to be producing more food than we know what to do with, so as long as someone's willing to pay for it, I doubt he'll have trouble getting food.
I know of a couple Manhattanites that do own cars but specifically only use them when they are going somewhere outside the city, not for in-city destinations.
Seriously, what are these fools going to do if the food does not come in from the country?
What are you really trying to say? That cities are dependent on the country? Yes they are. But the country is also dependent on the cities.
Gee, could be be that we are actually -- despite all evidence -- really one nation, after all?
