People who live in the densest, pedestrian-friendly parts of New York City have a significantly lower body mass index (BMI) compared to other New Yorkers, a new study finds.
Lower BMI indicates less body fat.
The researchers say placing shops, restaurants and public transit near residences may promote walking and independence from private automobiles.

That's because we walk a lot and are the fastest walkers. Most people in Manhattan don't have a car because there is very limited parking space so they either take public transportation or walk. If they have to go somewhere they usually rent a car.
Walking a couple of blocks a day to a train will make you healthy? LOL
The reason they are skinny is because they are spening all their money on rent.
1st their worshipped pets get eaten then they'll eat each other.
its from breathing in all that poison air....
Unless forced to, most NYC dwellers do not drive cars in the city.
Silly you. Food does not come from the country, it comes from the corner deli.
I suspect the real reason for this disparity, it that the folks living in the dense parts of NYC are a self-selected group, the 'beautiful people' who spend far more time with their personal trainer than with their grocer.
or running from muggers.
That's funny! Reminds me of someone telling me where most people think electricity comes from. It comes from the wall outlet!
Anyone who believes this has obviously never been to New Orleans, especially Rampart Street.
Its all walking. City people walk more than Suburban dwellers. We have less cars and either walk to work or take public transportation. I walk 4 miles from Queens into Manhattan and back which makes 8 miles a day for me. I can take public transportation but I like walking over the bridge.
Raid the suburbs and countryside; which is why the rest of us need to be armed!
Running from the law... dodging drive-by's... heavy crack, heroin, alcohol usage...

THAT Is Just Plain Wrong. Apparently you have never been to NYC have you?
I am sure that there are a good chunk of the people in Ray Nagins gloriously chocolate city that just dont know how to do anything....(some coon-ass cajuns not withstanding...).
If you're offended by that, you need to pick up a sense of humor at Wal Mart. They're on sale this week.
Although this is something I noticed as well during my time in Manhattan. As a rule, they tend to be thinner than average.
Part of the reason is the constant walking everywhere... because it's not periodic, it's every single day. But I think a much bigger portion of it's cause is the selection bias. The majority of people who live in Manhattan are fairly successful in highly competitive businesses and are less likely to let any part of their life get away from them including their weight. Either they are succeeding because they are disciplined and hard working, or they are in an industry which rewards their vanity, but either way, they will be careful about an extra pound or two.
I'm sure if you look at all of New York City including the Bronx, Brooklyn, Queens and Staten Island the average will rise back up near other cities, even though they walk about the same amount ans Manhattan dwellers.
BTW ... thinner doesn't necessarily mean better looking IMHO... although I did meet my wife when she was living on the upper east side, and I was in Murray Hill.
Then explain to me why all of my neighbors, even the ones I don't like, are not fat. We live in a rural area, none of us has a farm and we are all (about 15 families) in good shape. It has nothing to do with living in a city. It's choices. We make healthy choices. So do they apparently.
The idea that living in NYC is a way to stay healthy is absurd.
Well I agree with you too on that. I think it is choices. Most city people make choices to stay slim and healthy. They go to gyms more and run more do more outdoor activities. I really can't argue with you on that one. They also eat healthier.
