According to the report, visibility in Beijing went down to 50 meters (166 ft) during the mid-day.

They attribute the outbreak to the combination of excessive residual smoke from firework celebration of Lunar New Year, coupled with fog, and duststorm blowing from Inner Mongolia since this afternoon.

It must be causing a host of respiratory problems.

My wife was in China in Aug 06. She said the smog in Shanghai was considerably worse than the smog in Beijing.

Perhaps without the help of dust storm, Shanghai could be worse.

...50 meters (166 ft)...

The meters must be a little longer in Beijing.

It's not real smog like we have here in the USA, it's a counterfeit smog made to look just like smog in LA :-)
