I can tell you first hand that the SKS kills more Alaska moose and probably wolf than any other rifle. It is the ultimate utility weapon, and if they made one in .308, it would be THE milita weapon of choice (but please, a better trigger!).

The above comment based on living on the Yukon with Indians for a school year.

Guess what thats not their method so guns can't stop them but political organization will.

What does that have to do with your previous stupid statement?

Do you know what an 'assault rifle' is?

Any idea?

I guess we should allow people to have tanks in their backyard as well. There is no reason for any hunter to have a war weapon. With the terrorism that we have to deal with today the risk of allowing such weapons is too great.

What kind of pathetic socialist B$ are you trying to push on this forum? Ever heard of the Second Amendment? SHALL NOT BE INFRINGED.

PS: Odds are better than even I can take your household chemicals and make something a lot more dangerous than an assault rifle. Second, your car has a lot more kinetic energy than an assault rifle.

coyotes around here are starting to band up and attack people

They're bold when they aren't being actively hunted. I hear them but rarely see them around here. (NM)

So where do you draw the line? Nowhere? Is it OK for me to have a bazooka? A tank? An anti-aircraft missile? A cruise missile? A nuclear warhead?

Sophistry.

We aren't talking about crew-served weapons.

In the case of the AR-15 and AK-47 look-alikes, we are talking about semi-automatic only rifles, which RESEMBLE their military selective-fire cousins. They are not "weapons of war" or "assault rifles".

Please educate yourself about firearms. It will help you avoid makeing ignorant statements such as this.

And by the way, it's legal in the U.S. to own a tank. You should watch "Tank Overhaul" on the Military Channel. You'll see some beautiful examples.

i use an AR on 'chucks and coyotes. coyotes around here are starting to band up and attack people, so yes, i'll feel alot more comfortable knowing i have quicker follow-up shots, and a larger capacity than my 700.

That ain't huntin', that's varmint control. Tanks and howitzers should be considered appropriate tools too. Of course, as far as I'm concerned, an armed political uprising in defense of our Constitution should be considered varmint control as well.

Obviously a line has to be drawn somewhere.

Only the ignorant bring that up (and I mean that well).

The "line" is not across the object, it is across behavior.

If you can store it and use it safely, fine. If you don't, others can do anything necessary to disarm you. This applies from rocks to nukes.

The only special problem with WMDs is one cannot be reasonably sure of who is in range; one always evaluates not only the target, but who else will be affected.

Also: if you can afford it, you can probably handle it properly. If you can afford an F16, I'm pretty sure you won't do something stupid with it. Misuse isn't worthwhile, so we trust that sane people won't misuse such things - especially when getting such things is very costly.

You are not serious are you?

In these times, I believe we need more people trained and ready with modern arms. If course if you listen to the government, they promise to always protect you. Just pick up a news paper and I sure you will find a few articles of where the government failed to protect and you can look on the obituary page and find some people that got there early because the government failed to protect them. Each year criminals become more brazen and bold and given a near apocalyptic situation who knows what they will do. In such an event the police may even cease to exist for a time.

The Second Amendment is not about hunting.

So what is it about?

Yup, and allowing people to own artillery pieces is out of the question, too!

Did you know that it is legal to possess fully automatic machine guns in several states of this great nation?

Did you know that (IIRC) no legally owned and registered fully automatic machine gun has ever been used in a crime?

I'm still waiting for your definition of an "assault rifle".

How often are they used to commit crime? Answer: not very often.

As I grew up hunting in the 60s and 70s, I can't begin to recall the number of good men I hunted with that used British Enfields, Swedish Mausers, M-1 Carbines, etc, etc.

All considered "assault"/military weapons in their day. Many of them were cut down, had abbreviated stocks and other modifications that made them more appropriate for whitetail, rather than human targets.

Regardless, they were the weapons our boys used or brought home as souvenirs from a World War. My Dad hunted for years with a Remington 700 chambered in 30-06, surely a military round if there ever was one.

A new generation fought for Uncle Sam with M-16s in the jungles and deserts of the world, they have the right to collect, own, hunt and plink with the rifle and cartridge of their choice.

You don't even have to look back very far in our nation's history to find examples either. Try New Orleans beginning in August 2005

In such an event the police may even cease to exist for a time.

LA Riots: police pulled out, did not re-enter for 3 days.

Hurricane Andrew: widespread devistation rendered police inoperable for weeks.

Hurricane Katrina: widespread looting - with cops participating.

Your home: call the cops & order a pizza, see who shows up first.

In the words of that famous American, Louis Armstrong, when asked, ''Mr. Armstrong, what is jazz?'':

''Man, if you gotta ask, you'll never know.''

I can have a tank in my backyard!?!

I used to live near a feller in Woodinville, WA, who has a German WWI seige howitzer parked in his driveway. Seriously. Has a nice little traveling museum to go along with it. Durn near drove off the street first time I spotted it. Very cool.
