Ron Paul, the Real Republican?

Tuesday, February 20, 2007
By Radley Balko

When you read about a vote in Congress that goes something like 412-1, odds are pretty good that the sole "nay" came from Rep. Ron Paul, R-Texas. He so consistently votes against widely popular bills, in fact, that the Washington Post recently gave him the moniker "Congressman 'No.'"

Paul isn't a reflexive contrarian--he doesn't oppose just to oppose. Rather, he has a core set of principles that guide him. They happen to be the same principles envisioned by the framers of the U.S. Constitution: limited government, federalism, free trade and commerce -- with a premium on peace.

When most members of Congress see a bill for the first time, they immediately judge the bill on its merits, or if you're more cynical, they determine what the political interests that support them will think of it, or how it might benefit their constituents.

For Paul, the vast majority of bills don't get that far. He first asks, "Does the Constitution authorize Congress to pass this law?" Most of the time, the answer to that question is "no." And so Paul votes accordingly.

This hasn't won him many friends in Congress, or, for that matter, his own party. It hasn't won him influential committee assignments or powerful chairmanships, either. Those are generally handed out to the party animals who vote as they're told. An incorruptible man of principle in a corrupt body almost utterly devoid of principle, Paul is often a caucus of one.

Paul recently announced his intentions to run for president in 2008. For the few of us who still care about limited government, individual rights, and a sensible foreign policy, Paul's candidacy is terrific news....Continue reading

Gag, Ron Paul is a member of the surrender lobby, as a Reaganite I will look elsewhere, thanks.

Note: The source in the "Pro-Life" section refers to Duncan Hunter's flawed "Right to Life Act", in contrast to Ron Paul's better-written "Sanctity of Life Act".

The ruling government of Iraq is dominated by the psychopathic gang of murderers known as the Supreme Council for the Islamic Revolution in Iraq (SCIRI) and the Islamic Al Dawa Party, who are the very same Islamic Terrorist Parties which bombed the US & French Embassies in Kuwait and murdered 241 United States Marines in Beirut in 1983. Prime Minister Nouri al-Maliki, of the Al Dawa Party, was the Al Dawa bureau chief in Damascus in the 1980s and was thus heavily responsible for Al Dawa operations in Beirut, while parliament member Jamal Jafaar Mohammed of his ruling coalition is one of the "Kuwait 17", still under a Kuwaiti death sentence (in absentia) for his direct involvement in the vicious attack on the US Embassy in Kuwait! Ron Paul is the ONLY candidate calling for an immediate END to all Military and Financial support for the criminal Islamic Terrorist thug-regime of Iraq.

Ron Paul voted with the Democrats on the "non-binding resolution" on Iraq.

He is political "dead meat" as far as I'm concerned.

Were you aware of this and didn't give a hoot or are you just pushing damaged goods?

An incorruptible man of principle

Except, of course, when it means keeping his word on term limits.

Then he reveals himself to be as corruptible as any member of Congress.

Ron Paul is anything but a Republican.

If anything, he is a traditional Whig but he does not even meet those criteria.

He is a Libertarian by most modern standards, and a royal pain in the arse.

While Ron Paultalks a great game, his recent vote in favor of the Democrat's abandon-the-troops-in-Iraq bill causes me to differ.

His vote against reinforcement of the troops will get good men killed in Iraq and gave aid and comfort to the terrorists.

Ergo, Ron Paul is an evil little man, not worthy of respect, regardless of his great speeches.

Ron Paul turned his back on the troops.

He did NO such thing. Ron Paul is the ONLY Republican candidate who wants to get our troops out of harm's way and home to their families, by ending all Military and Financial support for the criminal Islamic Terrorist regime of Iraq.

Ron Paul: the Right Candidate for Our Troops. Bring 'em home alive, Ron!

I'd like to see Ron Paul as President, but I'd accept him as Chief Justice of the Supreme Court, too.

And whether someone stabs our fighting men in the back out of principle or for money, I don't much care what motivated him to become evil.

Ron Paul is still a contemptible scumbag.

He kept his word on term limits during his first stint in Congress.

Rightly or wrongly, though, term limits have turned into a dead letter issue since his re-election to Congress.

"And whether someone stabs our fighting men in the back out of principle or for money, I don't much care what motivated him to become evil."

A great example of C.S. Lewis's thesis that the exaggeration and single mindedness of almost any good quality, above all other, eventually becomes evil.

In other words, he wants to cut and run.

Nice rhetoric.

When the primary returns start coming in for Paul, you should shop your resume to the Obama campaign - or to the Hugo Chavez campaign if he decides to go through the charade of running again.

I got to admit that I like him on most issues but then he went and stood with the Democrats on the "surrender" vote. He may have had his own reasons but he still let himself be counted for their argument. I can't forgive that.
