For the second straight week, former New York City Mayor Rudy Giuliani (R) holds a fourteen percentage point lead in the race for the Republican Presidential nomination. Giuliani attracts support from 33% of Likely Primary Voters while Arizona Senator John McCain is supported by 19%. A week ago, it was Giuliani 32% McCain 18%.
Former House Speaker Newt Gingrich (R) picked up a few points this week and now is favored by 13%.
Trailing Gingrich is former Massachusetts Mitt Romney (R) at 9%. Senators Sam Brownback (R) and Chuck Hagel (R) each earn 3% support. It is not clear that Gingrich is running. He has said he will not make a decision until at least September.
Recently, Gingrich had nice things to say about Giuliani. Earlier in the process, he had positive words about Mitt Romney.
Rasmussen Reports releases updated polling data on the Republican nominating contest every Tuesday. Results for the Democrats are updated on Mondays.
Giuliani remains the most popular of all the Election 2008 hopefuls, but his numbers have dropped a bit recently. Currently, 63% of Americans have a favorable opinion of the Mayor, down from 69% in January and 71% in December. In November, his ratings were about the same as they are today.
McCain is viewed favorably by 54%, up a bit from 52% in January but down from 59% in December.
For Gingrich, the latest numbers are 43% favorable and 48% unfavorable.
Other GOP candidates are less well known to the general public.
In General Election match-ups, Giuliani leads against every Democrat including Senator Hillary Clinton, Senator Barack Obama, former Senator John Edwards, and former Vice-President Al Gore.
McCain is essentially tied with Clinton, Obama and Edwards.
See a summary of all match-ups along with favorability ratings and perceptions of the candidates’ ideology. A summary is also provided for Democratic contenders.
It will be interesting to see if he makes a bid for the nomination. Unfortunately, I agree that he is probably not electable.
If Newt comes out in support of one of the other candidates I think that candidate will get a bump in the polls from conservatives.
I agree with you. I know he has been off the record with one of the campaigns already. IMO, you will see him go with who he thinks can win because Newt wants to be a part of an Administration where he can make a difference. I think he would be great in a cabinet position where his expertise could be used to the fullest.
Newt is one smart guy but doesn't have the charisma to attract a cross section of voters that you need IMHO!
Newt doing well.
I maintain Newt should be given a new cabinet position
Chief Intellectual Officer.
The ideas and thoughts he brings to the table are so strong, his participation at any level will serve us all well.
What a mind.
Is there anybody out there who supports McVain? I don't know a single person who likes him.
As I wrote yesterday, I think McCain drops out by this fall..
Rudy - A leopard cannot change it's spots. Should run as a liberal Democrat, he'd beat Hillary.
Newt - Sell ice skates in hell. MSM would beat him to a pulp.
Mitt - Panderer, anything for a sale.
Brownback - who?
Hagel - You're kidding, right?
Hunter - Dark Horse, unmentioned.
Come on people, the MSM is feeding you Rudy because HE is the one THEY want to run against Hillary. These are the same MSM people who have done nothing but bash Bush, his policies, his whole presidency and come to coddle the likes of McCain and Rudy. Any candidate who exhibits any core conservative values is going to get the back of the bus treatment rom them.
Just a reminder: the "Reagan Democrats" are economic protectionists and social conservatives.
So, why is Hunter not listed? Hagel and Brownback are at 3%. Duh.........
The man has a brilliant mind. The news media and the Dems knew very well that if they didn't demonize him beyond repair, he would end up in the White House.
jeez, how many more times do I have to hear Rudy supporters tell me Newt can't win?
It's a win win for the liberals. Rudy or Hillary. They'll take it any way they can get it.
Socialism is on the rise indeed.
Fox News reported they polled Republicans last week and Newt Gingrich has 67% unfavorable ratings. Naturally, that's the person the ragers want as president. ROFL
Earlier today I posted on another thread that McCain only had 200 people show up for his town meeting in Des Moines last Saturday morning. The mood was relatively grim per David Yepsen who is the political writer for the DSM Register.
Looking fwd to seeing Newt beat out McCain, but I really get tired of these day-to-day polls.
I know. Rasmussen said they are going to have one out every week. I won't post it every week though. That is just too much even for me.
No, it isn't a conspiracy against the social cons. We had George Allen, who was favored to be the nominee by most analysts.
Now social conservatives are forced to scramble to support one of the lesser candidates, like Tancredo and Hunter. I'm skeptical they can get the job done against Hillary-Obama. Defeating Hillary isn't a sufficient condition for supporting a candidate, but it should be a necessary one.
Hillary's unfavorables are around 48%, Al Gore's are around 40%. Just a FYI. Rudy's are around 20%, and most of those are here.
Okay, hows this: There is 21% left unaccounted for in the numbers thrown out in the article. If consolidated behind one conservative candidate, that would put him in second place.
Fox News ran a poll of Republicans last week. Newt's unfavorable ratings was 67%. Naturally, this is the person a lot of the Rudy haters support. ROFL
