Gore has held these apocalyptic views about the environment for some time. So why, then, didn't Gore dump his family's large stock holdings in Occidental (Oxy) Petroleum? As executor of his family's trust, over the years Gore has controlled hundreds of thousands of dollars in Oxy stock. Oxy has been mired in controversy over oil drilling in ecologically sensitive areas.

Living carbon-neutral apparently doesn't mean living oil-stock free. Nor does it necessarily mean giving up a mining royalty either.

Humanity might be "sitting on a ticking time bomb," but Gore's home in Carthage is sitting on a zinc mine. Gore receives $20,000 a year in royalties from Pasminco Zinc, which operates a zinc concession on his property. Tennessee has cited the company for adding large quantities of barium, iron and zinc to the nearby Caney Fork River.

The issue here is not simply Gore's hypocrisy; it's a question of credibility. If he genuinely believes the apocalyptic vision he has put forth and calls for radical changes in the way other people live, why hasn't he made any radical change in his life? Giving up the zinc mine or one of his homes is not asking much, given that he wants the rest of us to radically change our lives.

If Al has incorporated himself, as AlGore LLC, they might be deductible as an "operating expense." But there's still the greater expense of buying them to begin with vs. the ~35% deduction to taxable income. Carbon offset credits are otherwise not deductible as a charitable contribution, to my knowledge. And if they were, there's still the greater cost to buy them vs. the charitable benefit to taxable income. And once sold, they are not-transferable unless re-sold to another party, in which case AlGore would lose the benefit of having purchased them to begin with.

Regardless, AlGore should LBE (lead by example) instead of "buying" a smaller carbon footprint for himself.

Another "man of the people" clueless of how the people actually live.

Gosh, I wonder what the "carbon footprint" of a few jihadists nukes going off in the USA would be?

Since Gore and his ilk are so eager to take our eye of the terrorist ball, I think they should think about such things.

Why wasn't Al Gore whining about this in the 2000 election? Why didn't he say anything or do anything much from 92 to 2000? Did he just wait until the dims were no longer responsible to whine and blame Bush???

Rich hypocrites. Normal people can't afford "offsets". If he is really concerned about the environment, he would figure out how to put his homes into warm shutdowns while he isn't there. Al Gore continues to raise the Moron Bar to new heights.
