Can We Afford the Democrats' Plan for Iraq?

Democrats quickly point to the cost of the war in Iraq. At a cost of roughly $100B per year, they use it as an economic issue. What they don't consider is the cost of failure in Iraq, nor have they articulated a strategy that will both affored victory and still extricate us from Iraq.

Let us consider a few scenarios in a post-withdrawal Iraq and calculate the costs involved.

Should even moderate instability result from the U. S, departure from Iraq, the price of oil will be likely to rise. A rise in oil prices that would result in a sustained $1 per gallon rise in the price of gasoline would have a $500B impact on our economy.

But that would not be the end of it. Consumer prices would be impacted for automobiles, appliances, electronic devices, and a host of other consumer goods that use plastics, which are petroleum based. Transportation costs would result in rising prices for almost every major consumable. The Fed, seeing inflation, would be likely to raise interest rates, which would slow down the economy even further.

Consider another alternative. Middle East countries decide the United States is no longer a trustworthy and reliable ally and move to the Euro as the official currency for oil pricing. Now, we would be subject to a highly unfavorable exchange rate that would only compound our economic difficulties.

Finally, the United States would not be the only country impacted by either of the above scenarios. The global economy would be greatly impacted by both the indirect effects of the U. S. economy tanking, as well as the direct effect on the individual national economies.

Democrats ask, if we can afford this war. We need to ask, can we afford their version of peace?

The Democrats answer to economics is raising taxes. Their answer to homeland security is to not protect our borders.

Their answer to Iraq is redeployment.

Ask them a question and you will rarely get a straight answer.

I'd rather spend $100B on squashing Islamist punks than whatever pet programs the Democrats might want to spend that money on.

We're spending a helluva lot more on the war on welfare, the war on drugs, and all these other Socialist "wars" that we've been fighting for decades, then we have been on the war on terror, which has only been going on for over 5 years.
