He said Secretary of Defense Donald Rumsfeld (news - bio) will be remembered as one of the worst to ever hold the job.

He said the United States is paying a heavy price for the mismanagement.

He said Rumsfeld never put enough troops on the ground to succeed in Iraq.

Former Oklahoma Governor Frank Keating and former Texas Senator Phil Gramm were at his side.

Don't dump on Rummy! You just blew it, McCain. You're dead to me.

The Rummy Fan Club even within the GOP is a very small institution.

Yes.   EXACTLY!
That's still a GOOD one, Devolve, and a GREAT reminder, too.

He was in Iowa this weekend (avoiding the Democrat resolution). Audience was polite but noncommittal.

I'm polite: I think he should be committed.

If support for Rummy is so great, perhaps Rumsfeld should run for President.

He would have my support over Rudy, Mc Cain and Willard but I am not all that sure he would have mass appeal.

McCain won't make many conservative friends with that statement. Rumsfeld may be more popular than McCain. At least I like Rumsfeld a whole lot more than him.

McCain is demented

His open mouth [Straight Squawk Express] as US President would be enough for people to trash their TV sets

Me too. But he's right on this one. I'm a long-time Rumsfeld supporter, but have finally come to this same conclusion. He ran the war like a CEO runs a drug company.

You are 100% right. And that approach was disastrous. We needed the generals to run this war, with a level of brutality matched only by WWII. Instead we got Rumsfeld, with his noble vision of a smaller, more efficient fighting force--at the worst possible time for it. And the almost insane obsession with limiting civilian casualties hamstrung our soldiers from the very beginning. Great CEO, lousy SecDef.

McCain's ego is hurt because Rummy wouldn't take "General" McCain's advice.

"one of the worst" may be hyperbole. But Rumsfeld's mistakes have been fairly obvious. I'm not second guessing him, just pointing the out.

Former Oklahoma Governor Frank Keating and former Texas Senator Phil Gramm were at his side.

Those are two very good endorsements.

Thank you for your service to our country, John McCain.
Now, let me hasten to join the many who wish you well... in your RETIREMENT.

McCain needs to stay at that retirement village in SC for a few years.
