MOUNT HOOD, Oregon (CNN) -- Search-and-rescue coordinators assembled Sunday in near white-out conditions on Mount Hood in Oregon in an attempt to find eight climbers -- three of whom had fallen from a ledge, the Clackamas County Sheriff's Office said in a written statement. The accident occurred at an altitude of more than 8,300 feet in the area of Illumination Saddle, said the office, which got news of the missing climbers at noon (3 p.m. ET). None of the three climbers who fell can be seen and none has communicated with the other five members of the party, who were in cell-phone contact with authorities, the statement said. All eight climbers are equipped with a mountain locator unit, an electronic device intended to enable rescuers to pinpoint a climber's location, the statement added. In addition to the sheriff's office, American Medical Response, Portland Mountain Rescue and Mountain Wave Communication Specialists were involved in the search, which is focused on a part of the mountain largely obscured by white-out conditions.

No it's not...the number is now up to eight.
I say we let Darwin have his way with them.
Yeah but adults should still have the right to do stupid stuff.
oh but don't you know that taxpayer money will not be spent on the rescue effort?
I think that states should start requiring climbers to post some kind of "rescue bond."
The costs of rescuing these people must be enormous.
CNN announces they have all been found alive.
The majestic Mount Darwin beckons.
A previous report said they were carrying emergency locators of some sort.
Wow. Including the three who fell?
Or do they just mean they have electronic signals from all of them?
I searched with title text and did not see the original...
How bored does one man (never mind 8) have to be to climb a mountain like Mt Hood in February? I'd sooner take a ball peen hammer to my left big toe
Great. How much will this cost the taxpayers?
Modern science could be encouraged to isolate the masculine gene, and then you guys could press to have it tamed, in children that show signs of courage, or adventurism.
I agree....prayers for the rescuers.
Probably Personal Locator Beacons (PLB's); they learned from the last incident.
$300 for worldwide GPS correlated search and rescue coverage is a screaming bargain.
