Almost a year ago, hundreds of thousands of immigrant workers and their families slipped out from the shadows of American life and walked boldly in daylight through Los Angeles, Washington, Chicago, New York and other cities. “We Are America,” their banners cried. The crowds, determined but peaceful, swelled into an immense sea. The nation was momentarily stunned.

A lot has happened since then. The country has summoned great energy to confront the immigration problem, but most of it has been misplaced, crudely and unevenly applied. It seeks not to solve the conundrum of a broken immigration system, but to subdue, in a million ways, the vulnerable men and women who are part of it. Government at all levels is working to keep unwanted immigrants in their place — on the other side of the border, in detention or in fear, toiling silently in the underground economy without recourse to the laws and protections the native-born expect...

Yes, the system is clearly broken -- it's actually designed to jail or deport aliens that break the immigration law.

The people from our ancestor's generations wanted to be America. Now, they (the illegals) want America to be Mexico, etc. A huge difference IMO.

The irony is that if they become legal, they will be promptly laid off because they will become too expensive and too much of a hassle to deal with.

They will have the skill set. But then they can demand the rights that all workers in the US have. Those same rights that make US workers "not want to do the jobs that illegals are willing to do."

So are just about everyone in our current penal system and yet, they're behind bars for breaking the law. What makes illegal immigrants any different?

The law, for one thing. Look up U.S. code, and tell me where "illegal entry" is more than an administrative infraction (punishable by a fine or 6 months imprisonment). If you want to criminalize the matter, fine... but unless you're going to throw out the entire U.S. legal system in the process, I don't think you can criminalize people without having judges to hear the cases. I don't think the taxpayers of the United States are going to be happy paying their $154,000 + annual salaries (not including pension and benefits. That doesn't sound Reaganesque to me... it sounds like a "tax and tax and tax and increase the size of the Federal Government" know-nothing plan.

I have to disagree on one point. Its not "open the borders" its "open the southern border". Most illegal alien supporters, whether they be in the liberal New York Times or right her on FR, if you listen to their words closely are for Mexican and/or Latin American immigration while still keeping the rest of the world out.

You miss the meaning of my post. These illegals claim to be "America". The majority of criminals in our jails are American citizens but they're behind bars as criminals ought to be. If you break the law, you are a criminal and therefore should be punished accordingly. Illegal immigrants somehow believe that laws do not apply to them. We must disabuse them of this conceit by holding them accountable for their law-breaking, whether they are "America" or not.
