Assault Rifles for Hunters? (Zumbo goes mad)
Remington Country website ^ | 16 FEB 2007 | Jim Zumbo

Posted on 02/18/2007 11:32:57 AM PST by xsrdx

As I write this, I'm hunting coyotes in southeastern Wyoming with Eddie Stevenson, PR Manager for Remington Arms, Greg Dennison, who is senior research engineer for Remington, and several writers. We're testing Remington's brand new .17 cal Spitfire bullet on coyotes.

I must be living in a vacuum. The guides on our hunt tell me that the use of AR and AK rifles have a rapidly growing following among hunters, especially prairie dog hunters. I had no clue. Only once in my life have I ever seen anyone using one of these firearms.

I call them "assault" rifles, which may upset some people. Excuse me, maybe I'm a traditionalist, but I see no place for these weapons among our hunting fraternity. I'll go so far as to call them "terrorist" rifles. They tell me that some companies are producing assault rifles that are "tackdrivers."

Sorry, folks, in my humble opinion, these things have no place in hunting. We don't need to be lumped into the group of people who terrorize the world with them, which is an obvious concern. I've always been comfortable with the statement that hunters don't use assault rifles. We've always been proud of our "sporting firearms."

This really has me concerned. As hunters, we don't need the image of walking around the woods carrying one of these weapons. To most of the public, an assault rifle is a terrifying thing. Let's divorce ourselves from them. I say game departments should ban them from the praries and woods.

My e-mail to Remington:

Why is Jim Zumbo working for you? He does not want us citizens to own military style weapons. I will think twice about future purchases of Remington products if he continues to be your spokesman. GOT IT??

I've been sitting here getting more and more fed up with all of this talk about these, pieces of machinery, having no legitimate sporting purpose, no legitimate hunting purpose, people, that is not the point of the second amendment!

Ditto.

I'm also tired of the stupidity (and I mean stupidity) of the self-proclaimed "sportsmen" and "hunters", who make statements such as Jim Zumbo has made.

I'm sure most people here have heard the demands from gun-control advocates, to ban so-called "non-sporting" firearms. We all know what they're really advocating is a ban on all semi-automatic firearms.

By making such ridiculous and ignorant statements as  "I say game departments should ban them from the praries and woods.",  Jim Zumbo is playing into the hands of these anti-gun zealots.

It's a shame Jim Zumbo doesn't have the brains to keep his mouth shut.

What do they do? Stand over the hole and blast the buggers out with sustained automatic fire?

Outdoor Life and Field & Stream have betrayed us many times in the past by including articles written by anti-hunters and anti-gun activists.

This is nothing new.

Send Mr. Zumbo an e-mail .

Screw him. I like my AR and when it gets broken in I'll use it for varminting.

Hunters should be careful, in Europe they are seen as wackier than the "wackiest" illegal gun owner for personal protection.

Not exactly; in my experience they are perceived as callous, out-of-touch, rich, idle, aristocratic twits. And there is much truth to the stereotype, for unlike this great nation, in Europe that is the only kind of person who can afford to hunt.

People who believe in armed self-defense, or even recreational shooting for its own sake, are still thought of by the average European as more dangerous and peculiar than a hunter. (Except by the animal rights wackos, perhaps.)

"not Remington" yes but Zumbo is employed by both Outdoor Life AND Remington. Seems both those companies need to hear a major outcry.

I wonder if he's against handguns then? No reason people have to use handguns for deer.

If it doesn't have full automatic (i.e. one trigger pull, multiple shots) then it's not an assult rifle.

Jim Zumbo is a professional hunter and outdoor writer employed by the Remington Arms company

Follow the money. Remington is losing sales to Norinco. This man is polishing his rice bowl. However, I won't be buying anything from Remington so long as they keep him on the payroll.

Especially if we're talking about people like Zumbo whose hunting is financed for him by big companies. The rest of us have to scratch out a little meat from 1 or 2 acre plots between the other hunters.

yeah but it LOOKS like one (/sarcasm)

Assault rifle is slowly being equated with semi-auto now. Didn't you notice (you probably did).

Though I understand your points, and agree with them, limiting capacity goes back to nanny state mentality.

The nanny says you can only have 3 shots in your gun, because this, this and this.

I can have 30 shots in my gun, but choose to only shoot 3 (obviously multiple targets), because of this, this, and this.

MOST hunters are not careless about hunting, and are careful with each other, animals, and the environment.

The nanny state chooses to assume EVERYBODY is an idiot, and only THEY (the government) are wise enough to regulate and administer.

(The above numbers were for discussion purposes only)

Remington seems to be taking this very seriously.

ALL - Jim Zumbo in NO WAY speaks for Remington! His opinions are his own. We at Remington take our 2nd Amendment Rights extremely seriously and ourselves market and manufacturer a AR based 308 rifle. Remington Arms supports the lawful use of all firearms by their owners in whatever legal manner they choose. We at Remington feel that it is the diversity of our tastes and uses of firearms that should also be the binding element that assists us all in defending the rights granted to us by our fore fathers.

Rest assured that Remington not only does not support Jim's view, we totally disagree! I have no explanation for his perspective.

I proudly own AR's and support everyones right to do so!

What makes me sick is how quickly people on the Internet have called to boycott Remington. All Jim said was he was hunting with our people! This is normal course in our industry. How else do people think we field test? with writers.

Remington has spent tens of millions of dollars to defend your rights and how quickly the thanks is threat and boycott! Please feel Free to post that Remington does not agree with Zumbo in any way shape or form and we will assess our relationship with him accordingly.

The nanny says you can only have 3 shots in your gun, because this, this and this.

As they also set a season, and decide bag limits. Are you against collective decisions on hunting seasons and bag limits as well? That is after all a far greater limitation.
