Money Trumps Peace
Glenn Beck ^ | 02/16/07 | Glenn Beck

BECK: All right. Welcome to the "Real Story."

For months on this program and programs just like it, we`ve been covering story after story about illegal immigration, everything from illegals getting in-state college tuition rates to U.S. border guards serving 11 years in prison for doing their job. And none of it -- I mean none of it -- has sat right, none of it has made sense, until now.

Last night, I told you that I had somewhat of an epiphany earlier this week during a presidential press conference. President Bush was responding to a question -- its topic was completely unrelated to immigration, but his answer brought everything together for me. I want you to listen closely.

(BEGIN VIDEO CLIP)

GEORGE W. BUSH, PRESIDENT OF THE UNITED STATES: Let`s put it this way: money trumps peace sometimes. In other words, commercial interests are very powerful interests throughout the world.

(END VIDEO CLIP)

BECK: OK, now, you know, since I`m not running for anything, let me be a little more honest and clear with you than he was. The "Real Story" is, money trumps everything.

Last week, I told you about a promising new cancer drug that they can`t get off the ground because there`s no patent available for it. No patent means no profits. And drug companies, well, we`re just not interested in that. Money trumps everything.

Then, of course, we have a little story about Bank of America, expanding a little program that allows people or, more accurately, illegal immigrants to obtain credit cards without a Social Security number. But even though the Bank of America is making all the headlines now, I got news for you: Citibank has been doing something very similar with virtually no scrutiny. Wells Fargo has been offering mortgages without Social Security numbers since last year.

Why? Why is that? Because there are between 12 million and 20 million illegal immigrants in this country right now, and money trumps everything. Last spring, Miller Brewing Company faced boycotts from Latino groups after donating money to a U.S. congressman who sponsored a bill that would have cracked down on illegal immigration.

Well, you can obviously imagine, I mean, you can`t have the $700 billion Hispanic market not drinking your beer. So the geniuses at Miller came up with a new plan. Few months and $30,000 later, Miller sponsored a large street demonstration to support the rights of illegal immigrants or, as Miller called it, quote, "the free movement of people." Oh, Miller, thank you. It was so beautiful. If I wasn`t a recovering alcoholic, I`d tip one back in your name tonight.

Not surprisingly, the boycotts quickly disappeared. Nobody said anything. Money trumps everything.

You know, I am the biggest capitalist you`ll ever meet. I believe with all my heart and soul that free markets and real competition solves almost anything. Global warming, competition. Capitalism. But the key here is, it almost every time solves things, because every once in a while, capitalism has to stand for something other than the bottom line.

John D. Rockefeller, I`m reading books about him right now, not really a good guy. This guy was known for his extraordinarily aggressive business tactics, to put it mildly. Even this guy said, quote, "I believe that every right implies a responsibility, every opportunity an obligation, every possession a duty."

Bank of America, you do have the right to market a credit card to illegal immigrants. But you have the American responsibility not to. Today, Bank of America, oh, they declined our invitation to come on the show. They`re very brave in their stance. Instead, they sent us a statement saying that their program fully complies with the U.S. Patriot Act.

You know what? They`re absolutely right. Completely legal. It`s also legal to market lottery tickets to gambling addicts and vodka to people like me. But that doesn`t really make it right, does it, Bank of America? It really doesn`t make it a responsible thing to do; it just makes it profitable.

The greatest thing about capitalism that maybe the Bank of America has forgotten is, everybody has the right to make choices. Now, you have a choice right now. You can sit there and you can get mad. You can -- because I`m like you, man, I sit in front of the TV and I get frustrated. I start to scream and yell at the TV. I`ll yell at my wife, "Yo, look at this, everybody is just looking out for themselves."

You have another choice. You could sit there and you could steam how your vote doesn`t even matter anymore. Glenn, I already done my thing. I`ve already voted. I worked hard at it. Nobody will listen to me. Or you can make a difficult choice, a personal choice, to support the people and the companies that support what you stand for, what America stands for.

For every Bank of America, there`s another bank that has no interest in selling to illegals. For every beer like Miller, there`s a microbrewery that has no interest in political agendas. For every company that is part of the problem, there are two others -- I`ll bet you there are five others, ten others, that want to be part of the solution, but it`s all about personal choices.

So, starting Monday, right here on this program, I`m going to start pointing out those companies that stand for something and those companies that sell us out every time, so you can make a choice, as well.

I was thinking about this today. I think the Constitution was divinely inspired. I really believe that. It is an amazing living document. How does it start? "We, the people." They`re the first three words. They are the answer to every problem we face, every injustice we have to endure.

Like you, I am mad as hell. Our country has been hijacked in the middle of the night by thieves, and I want it back. But instead of sitting there naively thinking that it`s my vote that counts, I realize that the real currency as always is cash. They`re absolutely right: Money does trump everything, including those businesses selling out their country in the dark of the night just to make more cash.

Steve Camarota, he is the director of research at the Center for Immigration Studies. Steve, you know what`s really scary about this Bank of America thing, is I believe this is more than just making a quick profit. This is actually about entrenching illegal aliens in our society, isn`t it?

STEVE CAMAROTA, CENTER OF IMMIGRATION STUDIES: Yes, I think you`re right, Glenn. Look, Bank of America gets the F-minus for corporate citizenship, but there`s a larger issue here, and there`s an agenda of a lot of people who probably went to Bank of America, made some presentations, said, "Hey, you should do this." And the goal here is to make illegality seem normal.

Get them their driver`s license; get them their in-state college tuition. So at some point, you could say, "Look, they have a job. They own a house. They have a credit card, my goodness. We can`t enforce the law now; it would be unfair, unreasonable." They`re embedding into our society, and Bank of America is helping them do that.

I think you`re right. It serves a larger agenda. Bank of America may be mostly voted by myopic greed, but I think there is a bigger issue here.

BECK: You know, I`ve got to tell you, I am so sick of this argument. I can`t take this argument anymore, because why are we talking about amnesty at this point? Shut the water off at this point. Let`s fix the frickin` border. You know what? We can talk about amnesty. Let`s shut these companies down that are making profits on the backs of illegal aliens and protect our self at the borders north and south. Why has this only become an amnesty issue?

CAMAROTA: Yes, I think because, in Washington here, not in America, but in Washington, you`ve got some Bush and some Republicans and most of the Democrats, all they seem to want to do is talk about how virtuous and wonderful illegal aliens are, and how we need to give them legal status, namely amnesty, that mean obviously they don`t want to call it that.

Now, the only interest group that`s really lined up against that is the American people. Most of corporate America, all the ethnic advocacy group, unfortunately my own church, the Catholic Church, most of the unions have all gone over to the idea of amnesty for illegal aliens. The only interest group that won`t go along is the American people, and that`s the only thing that`s preventing it right now, as I said.

BECK: Because we`re sitting around on our hands doing nothing. They`re stealing. They`re stealing the store out front while we`re sitting in the kitchen. It`s incredible to me.

Now, help me. Give me a thread to hang on to. I believe in, "We, the people." I believe people have the power to change. Can people make personal decisions? Is this going to mean anything to a company like Bank of America?

CAMAROTA: I think that -- yes, I mean, it`s not like corporate America has this great spine. If they get a lot of complaints, they might back off. They`re even more likely, if people go into the bank and say, "Hey, I`m taking my money out," that might shake up Bank of America and set an example.

The other thing people can do is get involved politically. Let their congressmen and senators know they don`t want amnesty. They want the law enforced, and that does make a big difference.

I can tell you what they say up here. Look, the public, I don`t hear from them, so I don`t think they care, so I`m going to go over and do what the interest groups want. But when they do hear from the American people, they back off, and say, "OK, you got my attention." So democracy works, but you kind of have to make it work.

BECK: Yes, I`ve got to tell you, Steve, thank you very much for your time. I just saw a poll we`re going to talk about on the radio on Monday. The rankings of Republicans and Democrats on what you find important. We`re talking about global warming. Nobody cares about global warming in comparison to illegal immigration, and we`ll tell you about that Monday on the radio show.

He's just figuring out that money trumps everything? When God was taken out of society, it had to be replaced by something. That something is the attaining of money. When the attainment of money is the reason for life, then the means justify the ends. Always. You can see it in every segement of our culture. We are a nation that worships money above all else. And our nation will fall because of it. Of that I am sure.

Bush has pressed the war on terror in to the middle east. He has left the borders open. People are not stupid and naturally see that doing the second thing makes the first very questionable. It's just common sense.

Why has this only become an amnesty issue?

It's an old trick of rhetoric, and fools fall for it all the time. Let's not talk about the cause, let's talk about the consequences - let's focus on amnesty. Forget about the border, just think of all those people already here who are going to become citizens... isn't that outrageous?

Yes, it is; but the whole thing, for twenty plus years, has been outrageous. No amnesty. Stop the aliens from crossing into this country. Punish the employers. Nothing hard about that - except the new Democrat congress and their Republican big business allies care more about Mexico than they do their own country. Absurd!

Cancelled both of my bank of America credit cards on Friday.

Refinanced my mortgage last fall, dropping Wells Fargo.

Mexicans don't want to kill us. The War is not questionable. I am for closed borders but I am pro war in the Middle East. One out of two is better than 0.

Illegal Mexicans have killed a lot of Americans. But that's not the issue, the issue is the bad guy moslems working with the Mexican and the South American gangs. Odds are that one day you will wake up to find out that just like the bad guys shooting down choppers in Iraq the same thing happens across the US but with commercial airliners. Google the word "MANPADS".

Illegal aliens = cheap labor for the country club wing of the Republican Party.

Illegal aliens = major new dependent minority for the Dimocrat Party.

Illegal aliens = Karl Rove thinks that at least 20 percent of them will vote Republican.

Illegal aliens = Nancy Pelosi thinks that at least 99 percent of them will vote Dimocrat.

What's not to like?

I supported George W. Bush years before most Freepers ever heard of him. I don't know what happened to him but he's certainly not the person he used to be or he never was that person in the first place.
