Good for McCain
National Review On Line ^ | 2/17/07 | Kathryn Jean Lopez

Posted on 02/17/2007 3:13:16 PM PST by zook

When Majority Leader Harry Reid announced late Thursday that there would be a Saturday Senate session to yet again debate a cowardly nonbinding Iraq resolution, Arizona senator John McCain didn’t change his weekend campaign plans.

Good for Senator McCain.

The Democrats — and at least one GOP opponent’s camp — sent the news that McCain would spend Saturday in Iowa not Washington around as if they had McCain in a Gotcha! moment. “McCain’s been the biggest cheerleader for the president on the war — the least he can do is actually show up for the vote,” a DNC spokesman crowed to the Politico’s Jonathan Martin.

Saturday’s proceedings however, are a disgrace. John McCain, who was for the surge long before the White House was, has made his position on the surge clear. Though vote skipping is not something to encourage in a United States senator, you don’t have to be a campaign donor to be glad that he went to Iowa as planned this Saturday.

John McCain wanted nothing to do with the Saturday stunt. So, instead of catching the first flight back to D.C., McCain blasted the demoralizing antic as “an insult to the public and our soldiers to think a cloture vote to cut off debate on a motion to proceed to another cloture vote to cut off debate about a meaningless resolution is anything other than a partisan stunt and an evasion of our responsibilities.”

As the former Naval aviator and Vietnam prisoner of war said earlier this month when the Senate first took up this nonbinding nonsense: “Where is the intellectual honesty if you think that you're sending young Americans into harm's way in a futile effort? I know if I felt that way, I would say, 'My resolution is a binding resolution that cuts off funding.' That's the intellectually honest approach."

So, you can't summarize it for people who don't wish to read all 26 links? My sense is that if you can't do that, then I wouldn't find your 26 links very persuasive.

I invite you again to give me your 2 or 3 best shots.

If you had the salt you think you have you'd be able to make an argument. Apparently, all you can offer is a data dump. I have no time to click on and read all your links, and apparently you don't have the time or ability to make a reasoned arguement.

Oh, I almost forgot--LQTMS

Either McCain KNEW it would not pass .. or he's so arrogant that he just didn't care if it passed or not .. since it's non-binding.

Or, perhaps for his own political reasons, he didn't want to have to go on record as having a stance on the subject.

That's a very good point ..!

I guess wanting to remain flexible about whether your country should act like cowards is a big choice for some people.

McCain's a loser...

Such penetrating analysis. Must have taken your entire team of me-too-boys several hours to come up with that.

John McCain - McCain-Feingold, gun show checks, Geneva accord treatment for terrorists, pro-illegal aliens, supported Dems in selecting Supreme Court Judges, supports political censoring of internet forums like this one - John McCain - the Media's FAVORITE Republican.

And still after all that, I think he'd make a good president. [partial sarcasm off]

Like all the McCain haters, you distort facts and exaggerate differences.

1. A lot of us don't think background checks at gun shows are a bad idea.
2. He never "supported Dems" with regard to SC nominations. That's a distortion of what happened.
3. He doesn't favor "censoring of internet forums like this one." Funny thing--we have yet to be censored here, even during the last pres. election. Seems like hyperbolic paranoia.
4. Geneva Accord--I guess it might have something to do with his background and his general sense of what's fair. I only go along with him part of the way here. But he's far from the only GOP lawmaker who felt this way. Hardly cause for trashing him.

"Like all the McCain haters, you distort facts and exaggerate differences. "

No. I just illustrate the reasons the man is totally unfit for the office of President. I wouldn't even want him for a "friend".

"1. A lot of us don't think background checks at gun shows are a bad idea. "

I think a lot of "us" do and I think out there in the Red States a lot more are aggrevated by it. Its none of the Federal Government's business what kind of gun is sold to whom as long as the gun is legal under Federal Law. I don't think America is a safer place thanks to Winny Brady.

"2. He never "supported Dems" with regard to SC nominations. That's a distortion of what happened. "

Right. He and his gang of seven got together with the Dems to lecture them on strict constructionalism.

"3. He doesn't favor "censoring of internet forums like this one."

Mr. Robinson would disagree with you on that one and so would I.

"4. Geneva Accord--I guess it might have something to do with his background and his general sense of what's fair. I only go along with him part of the way here. But he's far from the only GOP lawmaker who felt this way. Hardly cause for trashing him."

I don't think equating people who wear no uniform, follow no code of moral behavior to their prisoners and who are not entitled to Geneva Accord Treatment as they never signed the Geneva Accord and wouldn't have the slightest idea what its about anyway deserve any special treatment under that agreement. And if that's a sample of his idea of fair play, perhaps we'd be better off without him.

By the way, didn't John McCain abandon his sick wife and then marry the Coor's heiress? How old is she? How old is McCain?

I don't hate McCain - I loathe him. But if he does get the nomination and Hitlery runs - well then maybe I'll be forced to swollow some peptobismol to keep from vomiting in order to pull the lever for him. In the meantime I'll do my level best to try to get a real conservative nominated so I won't be forced to face such intestinal difficulties on Election DAy.

Your constant shilling for China here on FR is starting to make sense.

Well, then, why don't you explain it all for us?

You exemplefy why the extreme right is as dangerous as the extreme left. When people disagree with you, you call them names and try to impune their motives or principles. Fortunately, your group has the smallest of members.

Don't be such an ass. You think I haven't done tons of reading over the years on McCain? You think you're the only one?

You have a problem with literacy. You can't make a cogent argument. If someone, whether they be a student, a fellow citizen, or a politician wants to persuade, they need to do more than provide a dozen articles, books, links, etc. They need to be able to explain themselves.

Why not spend some time and work on acquiring this skill?

Fine, we disagree on McCain. But again, I suspect that most conservatives are willing to accept reasonable background checks for potential gun owners, e.g., making sure they have no criminal or problematic mental health record.

Nor do I believe that it's wrong for McCain to have discussed with Democrats the problem of judicial appointments being blocked; we actually ended up pretty good on this issue without having to go nuclear.

I'm familiar with the fears about how CFR may threaten groups like FR. I'm not at all persuaded that these fears are justified. If and when the gov. starts shutting down web sites like this, you let me know. But, I'd add, it would be foolish for any web site to censor itself because of CFR.

Geneva--I'm pretty sure that all McCain was after here was a ban on torture. However, I have no doubt that if it came down to a serious national defense issue, McCain would allow the use all means necessary to protect the nation.

The personal stuff? I couldn't care less.

The only thing to explain is that you don't give a crap about individual liberty, be it freedom of speech or the right to keep and bear arms. It's no wonder why you give the scumbags in the Chinese government passes all of the time.

I love the 1st and 2nd Amendments. But I'm neither an anarchist nor a paranoic hack. I do not really want felons or the mentally ill to be able to buy guns on the spot at gun shows. I think that these kinds of checks are perfectly consistent with the 2nd Amendment.

Moreover, yep, I do think it's paranoic to view CFR as some kind of historic threat to free speech. Free speech is still prospering in this nation in spite of it. The parts of it more offensive to conservatives are highly unlikely to be interpreted or enforced in the fashion so feared by some around here.

And I do believe that China has grown significantly, even dramatically in terms of the political and economic freedom it allows its people. China is a great nation and America will only benefit by finding constructive ways to encourage its development and to build peaceful relations between our two countries.

I am proud of my principled and informed views. The smears of small, ignorant people, Freepers or otherwise, are meaningless to me.

The most appropriate response to a post like yours (i.e., McCain as "traitor") is "yeah, right."

Any unbiased reader will note that the greatest number of "pissed off" Freepers are in the anti-McCain camp.
