Inglis breaks rank with GOP, backs resolution

WASHINGTON - Rep. Bob Inglis of South Carolina voted Friday against President Bush's dispatch of more troops to Iraq, joining just 16 other Republican lawmakers who opposed the surge in a House vote.

After the vote, Inglis said it was one of the most difficult decisions of his more than eight years in Congress.

"I saw this vote as a vote of conscience, rather than a vote of representation," Inglis said in an interview. "I consciously tried to disregard the political consequences."

Inglis said his office had received at least 250 calls about the vote, mainly from constituents, and he ruefully estimated that 245 opposed his decision to back the resolution.

Inglis, who lives in Travelers Rest near Greenville and represents the 4th Congressional District, said he was influenced by frequent reports from his former legislative director, who he said is serving in Tikrit, north of Baghdad, as a member of the Air National Guard.

"It is not time to withdraw, it is not time to cut off funds, but I doubt the effectiveness of a surge," Inglis said.

Inglis is getting ripped on phone calls. Notice he retreats to the pious "I had to vote my conscience" blather....yet his conscience doesn't bother him when he departs from his duty to fully represent his constituency that elected him.

95+% against (245 out of 250) him and he acts like this pious paragon of character and virtue.

Nail this sissy.

Why was it a difficult decision? He gets lots of media coverage and everybody knows the media can put you in a position of power or make you disappear.

Not difficult at all.

Yes ... It sounds like this district in SC needs a new Republican representative.

ANY Rep. that voted for this outrageous POS is dirt under the troops feet; toilet paper for them to use; the slime that snakes slither on...

I have never been so angry at anything in my life, and I thought that shabby, disgraceful ending to the Vietnam war was bad, this is way beyond that...

And to think that slimy hairy reid is asking for a vote in the senate, course with my two senators you know how they are voting, baby casey jr and specter-D of PA. Have to uphold the Nation of Philadelphia and the Union of Scranton.

If Inglis cannot represent the will of the people of his district, he should do the honorable thing and resign and let someone else do the job. He and his clear conscience can find other employment.

Exactly my point...his "conscience" should be shouting at him "Hypocrite...you cannot represent a constituency that elected you..."

He is a traitor.

Maybe we are better off that he did not beat Fritz Hollings for the Senate seat in 1998.

I do not think that a representative must always vote exactly as the majority of voters in his district would have him do, But I would expect him to show some brains and some character. This guy shows neither.

He should be bounced out as quickly as possible.

What an idiot. 245 people out of what, 50,000 people who probably live in his district. The moonbats pressured him. Does he really believe these people are going to support him in 2008

This is the American Conservative Union's(ACU's) ratings of the South Carolina Congressional delegation. Inglis has a 2005 ACU rating of 80, which is the South Carolina political equivalent of being a "moderate" Republican.

Is there any way that people can fight and re-call each of these traitors. At least in the more conservative states. Given up on the liberal states of NE & California. Isn't it time we fought back and fought back hard? Put these reps on notice... I believe they will ignore phones and faxes but if people gather in large forces demanding a re-call or whatever it is called.. will get noticed.

Right now as I see it... we don't hear much about peoples outrage... Large numbers of anti-war yes... but why can't we get equally larges forces of people to show support for the military etc.
Maybe I'm just dreaming... I see large #'s of Anti always on display... and know that most are being paid to protest.. how about turn around? Unless large numbers of people actually protest in support... Congress will ignore the "will of the people".

I think if it truly was a matter of conscience he would be raising hell all the time about the waste and fraud in Congress. It is funny how politicians have convenient consciences.

Note, I will be doing everything in my power as an ordinary citizen to see that you are NOT re-elected in 08. This is treason, plain and simple. Just be glad Lincoln is not President - you would be haning from the gallows.
